I don't mean that as a knock on "Mr. Vampire". I thought that movie as was pretty good. It's just that "Mr. Vampire II" is a little bit better. "Mr. Vampire II" has a lot of goodwill going for it. The cast is likeable and the jokes are funny but the movie does skip a beat here and there. That long slow motion stuff in the middle was funny at first but then it goes on forever. The stuff with the kids, however, is fun.
I'm not a big fan of "unrated' versions of movies. I usually find that differences between the unrated versions and the theatrical versions aren't worth the extra length. There's usually a reason they cut that stuff out in the first place. That said, I watched the unrated version of "EuroTrip" and, I have to say, it's the only way to watch this movie. "EuroTrip" is has a very likeable cast, a ton of laughs and more than its fair share of nudity. "EuroTrip" is a lot of fun. Honorable mention: the terrific DVD commentary.
When I first put on "Mr. Vampire" (on the Criterion Channel) I thought I was in for a goofy but serious karate monster movie. It's not. It's a goofy karate monster comedy. Okay, fine. I changed gears and, for the most part, I enjoyed the movie. The cast is likeable and the jokes were pretty funny. "Mr. Vampire" runs out of steam towards the end mostly because the boss vampire looks ridiculous. I also could have done without spending the last five minutes of the movie re-watching the movies' "highlights".
