Similar to "We Need to Talk About Kevin" or "Defending Jacob" but much slower and far more boring. Adolescence tries hard to build tension and psychological depth, but it lacks the gripping narrative that made those two so compelling. The pacing is glacial, and scenes that could have been emotionally impactful instead drag on, losing their punch. The performances are decent, but the storyline ultimately fails to engage or deliver any meaningful payoff. A disappointing watch that left me frequently checking how much time was left, waiting in vain for something interesting or surprising to finally happen.
"Loot" on Apple TV attempts to craft a satirical view of the ultra-wealthy through the eyes of its protagonist, played by Maya Rudolf, whose character inherits a vast fortune and suddenly must navigate her new life. The show strives to highlight the absurdities of excess and detachment from reality that often come with extreme wealth. However, it falls short in delivering its comedic intent. Rudolf's character, meant to appear naively out of touch, instead comes off as unintelligent, which detracts from the satire. Personally, I've never been a big fan of Maya Rudolf's comedic style, and "Loot" does not alter my perception. The humor, which is crucial for a show of this nature, misses the mark, making the series feel like an overly drawn-out, laugh-deficient SNL skit. In sum, "Loot" lacks the sharp wit and timing required to make its critique both insightful and entertaining.
I don't understand these low ratings. This show is hilarious. It was created by and stars Nasim Pedrad of SNL fame (I know her best from Netflix's Desperados) who portrays the titular character Chad, a 14 year old boy as he goes throughout his first year of high school. Chad is selfish and often inappropriate but it makes for hilarious television to those with a sense of humor.
