Before going into this movie I only knew about Dean Koontz as a suspence writer since once on channel 5 they aired INTENSITY based on one of his best sellers that was a thriller about a woman lawyer stalked by an escaped convict that claims to be innocent so I wouldn't expect he would have wrote something about mutant creatures. But this doesn't matter because I ended being in the minority of the ones that love it and didn't even expected it.
Despite I never saw the first PROM NIGHT I was curious for years about HELLO MARY LOU PROM NIGHT II because it stars Michael Ironside which is always great even in the bad movies and when I saw it on February 2024 I knew it wasn't necessary to watch the first PROM NIGHT since they aren't connected.
The story begins in 1956 when at a prom Bill Nordham notices his date Mary Lou making out with Buddy Cooper and to make matters worse for Bill, Mary says that she only used him when she needed him (nice date uh?). When Mary Lou is announced prom queen Bill throws a stink bomb on stage that manages to ignite her dress burning her alive.
Then we move to 1986: Vicki Carpenter finds a trunk with Mary Lou's dress and crown of when she became prom queen and inadvertently she unleashes Mary Lou's spirit; later in the night Vicki's friend Jess Browning is killed in a way that looks like a suicide. When Buddy's Bible goes into flames he then goes to Nordham who is now the school principal but dismissed as crazy: hours later Buddy is murdered by Vicki probably possessed by Mary Lou's dress that in fact ends up killing everybody that dares confront her. After rigging the prom results, Vicki tries to dominate on stage with Bill ending injured in an attempt of stopping her. Before Vicki can try to make Bill's son and her boyfriend in a trunk that would take to the underworld, Bill arrives in time taking away the crown. Minutes later Billy accepts to drive Vicki and her boyfriend to their respective homes but as soon as they depart... Bill is possessed by Mary Lou's spirit! Then the movie ends.
Not having seen the predecessor wasn't exactly an issue because in the stories the cast and characters always change and this was great on its own. Wickedly scary just like I love them, great 1980s atmosphere and songs of those years that put lots of nostalgia for those times and make some curious of watching all the other entries in the franchise. Not to be missed by horror fans.
