Nancy Kelly shines as a smart photograph reporter in this fast paced quick moving amusing screwball comedy.
Chester Morris is the editor of Flick - a photo journal looking for new stories who hires Nancy Kelly as a photographer after seeing a picture she's taken of an airplane crash. What he does not know is that the picture is a fake - just what his boss - a healthy obsessed Richard Gaines who delivers carrots to all the magazine staff - has ordered him to avoid.
From the beginning the film moves fast. Chester Morris delivers a great performance that fits him like a glove as fast talking quick thinking Flick editor. This screwball comedy has many bright moments, modern style touches (i.e. Characters break the third wall by speaking directly to the audience), and surprising twists. Fast, well-written dialogues, simple but really effective script, incredible rhythm and not a boring moment.
Shake all this ingredients together and you have a bright, inspired screwball comedy with an added whodunit mystery and a surprising ending all packed in one hour of frantic energetic entertainment.
Highly recommended.

Mix murder with mystery and add a few drops of humor. Remove it -not shake it. The result? An excepcional, fun, entertaining movie that happens to be the first of a series of Michael Shayne mysteries. And what an entry!
Lloyd Nolan shines playing a charismatic, smart, dynamic Michael Shayne with brains and lots of resources to solve any mystery - including counting on aunt Olivia's help!. Nolan really excells in this role.
The script (by Stanley Rauh, Manning O'Connor and Brett Halliday) is very well done with constant twists and tricks and a frantic rhythm. Dialogues are brilliant and funny (see trivia section). Shayne messes everything and constantly tricks police providing false evidences and turning everything upside down with the invaluable help of aunt Olivia (great characterization by Elizabeth Patterson), a murder mystery fan.
Sets are effective and beautifully designed. All the actors play at their best and the mystery is trully effective.
All this makes this movie a highly enjoyable and very entertaining film.

Only a humble tv movie but the best portrait of Elvis by far. Kurt Russell simply IS Elvis. His looks, his movements, his full performance should deserved an oscar. Shelley Winters is great too, delivering a perfect portrait of Elvis' mother.
Although not Elvis' voice Ronnie McDowwell singing is superb. His sound and singing style really resembles Elvis' in this movie.
You can see Russell enjoys what he is doing - in fact he declared he was an avid Elvis fan - and Carpenter really cares about the film, telling the story of Elvis -the man and the singer - in a respectful way. Not a explotation film although several facts have been altered or inacurately shown. Bit slow-paced and clearly low-budget, the movie is however, a complete and honest report on Elvis life and music.
