They at Disney should realise that we need more prerecorded stage shows on Disney+ and less of what they are giving us with uninspired Disney live action movies. This is a beautiful show and it captures the essence of the animated movie perfectly. Since the animated movie is already a musical this looks like the logical way to try telling this story. All the beloved characters of the movie are here. The songs are really not doing it for me. I haven't found the perfect dynamic song to recognise this musical by because it already exists in the animated movie. "Frozen" is made by pure musical theatre wonder and magic and that's why I enjoyed every minute of this. I just wish its soundtrack was as memorable as it is in the original.
This is what modern animation should look like. The visuals in this film are breathtaking - every frame, every scene feels like a piece of art. But when it comes to the story, the film falls short. It's a slow burn with no clear resolution, and that's where the issues begin. At 2.5 hours, it's a long watch, and most of the runtime is spent exploring relationships. The problem is that the script tries to expand on too many different ideas without fully developing any of them. By the end, the film feels unfinished - several plot threads go nowhere, and the core story isn't strong enough to hold it all together. Whatever emotional impact it was aiming for gets lost in the runtime and a script that needed tightening to truly land.
I really can't shake the thought that this movie was made because they knew they'd sell tones of merchandise. And I mean it's true "Stitch" was selling like crazy over the years, so who can blame them? I mean I do, I do blame them! "Lilo and Stitch" the original classic was very grounded in the relationships. The central meaning of ohana and founded families is the blueprint on which they've built this quirky movie and that's the reason it worked in the first place. Everything looked bizzare but at its core are real human emotions and that feel that you found where you belong. In the new live-action version these themes are toned down. The young actresses are doing a really good job but sadly their arcs are not as profound as they used to be. Tne comic relief side characters have lost their arcs and they never fit in this concept of the original story of a founding family. They tried to fix things that weren't made to be fixed and thus they've changed the emotional pull of the story. The bond between Lilo and Stitch is sadly not apparent in this one. This movie is made to be forgotten.
