If only a solid trilogy of these movies came out two years apart and ended in the year 2000... It could have been one of the best sports movie franchises ever...!
Before the first one in '96 we had Caddy Shack, and then Happy Gilmore which was one of the best comedies of that year... So far fetched with great characters and even dream sequences that were ultra funny.
The issue with the belated sequel, the legacy sequel if you will, is that the energy is hard to match... Much like with Axel Foley (Beverly Hills Cop 4) from last year... The characters can be new or reprising the old roll, but still need charm and something to like... It really all comes down to the script and it just needed to be tighter, punchier, more grit... Its just too much of a background movie... Unlike the first one that was right up in your face, and you didn't want to miss any scene or funny line...
Not sure about these legacy sequels as yet, but time is starting to tell...

It's a good movie... it's just for kids...
It doesn't explain too much of the world in the first act, just enough for a young audience. It moves at a brisk pace through act 2 and has an ending you would expect with most of the action ramping up... excellent production and set design, the robot effects and CGI look amazing... So well made these types of films now.
It is strange in many ways however that storyline's don't seem to be unique in any way these days, have writers become less creative, or do they just think the audience wants the same thing over and over... Hard to say really, but just like 'Real Steal' was the new version of Stalone's classic 'Over the Top' this is the new version of Distric 9.,,
Ideal for a young audience...

Could we be slowly getting back to the good ol days of mid-90s action thriller's...? I really think we are getting close, it's just the quality isnt quite there just yet. To sustain the level of tension and suspenseful moments throughout takes time, patience and a really tightly paced script. This one has its moments...
As a Netflix produced Christmas time thriller, it was OK... Coming in at 2hrs it maybe overstays it welcome just a tad, however the simple plot, good actors, and one central location for the most part gives it some good points. This was actually a really good late adternoon viewing and you don't need to know anything plot wise going in, or even have seen the trailer or thumbnail on your Netflix homepage. Best to just hit play and let the story unfold as you get into the characters, and their motivations.
I don't think anything could ever top the original speed from 1994, however these types of genre films are very important to any movie fan, especially those who lived through the 90s...
Give this one a go...
