It's a terrible film. It's as boring as can be, I have no words, i almost have no words. If you're not a Russian spectator, then it may be OK with you but any of us who knows soviet or Russian actors can notice their absence in this adaptation - except of Oleg Menschikov. It seems that such cast was intended, to avoid rivals who could steal a scene ,or i don't know - anyway ,it seems strange. These second-plan characters are so very neutral and faceless, and they all play as if they have no inspiration and wish and even weren't promised money. The book's characters are all bright and memorable, but here it seems that only Bender deserves attention - and Menschikov plays him so feebly, at least I imagined Ostap Bender to be absolutely different. He plays carelessly and lazily, which is a shame. He promised not to play in bad movies, which can make you think that "Zolotoy telenok" is good - but it's awful, really awful.
Did you ever notice that most - or all - of the films telling us about courage and honor, and devotion , and kindness, are about the past? Or maybe these are coincidences.. This is a very good film, tragic and sad, about people with clear hearts and Can you believe in a woman who's waiting for someone she never knew well, met him only several times - but knew that something were between them that will never let her forget him - believe in her waiting for him for years? All the letters she wrote , they were for him and for herself , to help her hold on and to not lose faith. And can you believe in a man who tries to get to her to her for only one day, or maybe less, and the day which may never really come? And the way the story ended is the only one possible. Inman could kill the man who shot him in he end, even without talking to him ,and Ada could give up, find herself someone else or merely get insane, but they two have met - through the horror of war , despite people's meanness - they've met and had the happiest moments in their lives, those moments which never last forever.
It's a crying marasmus!!! It's nonsense! It's marvelous! Yeah i'm telling you. Have no idea how would people react on a film of this kind to appear in 1939 , i'm f bit too young to remember this, but such stylization nowadays is a gem. The image, and the sound, and the plot (saving the world ,as usual, and a love line all the way through - nothing new , to put mildly)? and the characters! To me , Sky Captain is a pompous mug always trapping in silly situations - it must be a parody on the old-time movie heroes, at least i feel it is, and Polly is way too smart as well , so the only sane person there is Dex and if i were Polly, i'd prefer him at the end (but, certainly , would cling to Joe while the plot is going on , so is the nature of women:)) Great! Jude is a brilliant comedian , now i know this(curious , are some of sky Capnain's features - his own? %)) OK, no more on personal subject... in brief - watch this and you'll enjoy what you see!
