This movie is part of the spanish cultural heritage. That is the play is that it is based on.

Written by Fernando Rojas in the beginning of the renaissance it was meant as a warning for the youth in his days. That is why this movie feel so staged all the time. For Penelope Cruz it was the beginning of her career and it must have been a huge honor to have been selected for this role.

The movie follows the play fairly truly from beginning to the end. All characters specialy la Celestina were done well and they didn't look all to professional. Remember it was a play meant to be performed at local gatherings. If you go to Salamanca in Spain you can find the parco Calisto y Melibea as a rememberance. Only open at times noboddy knows.

So long have I searched to find this movie that I saw more than four decades ago on television.

Then some seeds were planted in me that came up only recently. And what a revelation. It is a great movie if you have elderly parents. In general it is a great work of art to reflect on life and death.

The colorfull imagery added to the dreamy athmosphere. The theatrical setting made it more real than movies with a more pollished imagery.

It is a verry captivating movie that can easily stick to you for the rest of your life.

The movie was not known to me untill recently. But did it reach the audience it deserved? The combination of classical music and a message reminds me of many films that were directed by A. Tarkovski.

In 1977 we had Slap Shot starring Paul Newman. It is like Rollerball minus Tarkovski.
