This movie is weird and at times a little goofy. The plot is basic, predictable, and sometimes absurd. When I saw Nicholas Cage was in it, I was hoping for something on the caliber of The Old Way, it is not. In fact Cage is a bit disappointing. The rest of the cast kinda phones it in here; which is unfortunate because there some good actors in this. The movie is fun with a lot of action. Although the action is mostly the bad guys blindly shooting across the street at the good guys.
It's worth watching if you are already a six pack deep and don't have the energy to pay much attention; at least that's how I enjoyed it.

Given a few events that happen, particularly the ending, it seems believable that this movie is based on a true story. Although the only evidence I found to support this is a connection to a very old Saxton story. I think this is a western telling of that original story. Cusack gives an average performance. Goodman, who shows up about halfway through, gives an incredible performance. I wish he would have done more westerns. Besides those two there are a lot of other recognizable faces. Kurt Fuller and John McGinley are both great. The plot is good but keep in mind this movie is trying to convince you that it is a true story. Things don't always work out for out hero the way we would like. There is a bit of lazy writing here and there to move the plot forward, but nothing crazy for a western.
I recommend this to folks who love westerns. If you're just a fan of the actors this is probably skippable.

This movie does not star Trace Adkins or Kris Kristofferson as I was led to believe. Both are barely in the movie. It stars Michael Pare. Pare does a good job, Kristofferson seems like he is reading lines from a different movie, Adkins is standard Adkins. The movie takes about 30 minutes before the plot really begins. The story had potential but never fully developed. For example, it's implied that the main character has a gunfighter past but it is only mentioned briefly twice and never explained or explored. In my opinion the violence is not as gritty as some of the other reviewers stated. The sets may have been acceptable if they were not trying to show Dodge City and Wichita. The towns were too small and too clean. Maybe if the timeline was earlier that would have worked. If you do have the misfortune of watching this pay attention to the extras in the background. They must have been given zero guidance; it's kinda funny seeing them roam about aimlessly.
Skip this movie. Watch Hostiles or The Salvation if your looking for something realistic and gritty and Stagecoach for your Adkins fix.
