This movie has the bells and whistles of a decent thriller but the writing, directing and acting fails to deliver the real thing. Woodley is just not a good actor and not helped by obvious, stilted dialogue. Mendelsohn delivers a surprisingly poor performance, for some reason I think his acting has gotten worse ever since he was in Star Wars. This movie is designed for Netflix. Dark, moody lighting and music to augment what is ultimately a very dull story. The writing is trying so hard to be a statement in every scene. The plot doesn't do anything and it's completely ridiculous. I wouldn't watch it unless you're really bored, there are dozens of better thrillers.
This isn't meta, or pseudocomedy it's just lazy and rudderless. The guests are all awkward and even the most gregarious comics are rendered palid by the sheer lack of structure and timing. I have a sneaking suspicion Netflix set this up in order to troubleshoot their ability to stream a live worldwide broadcast in anticipation of the Tyson/Paul fight. So this is just a cheap throwaway they didn't invest in and let mulaney do whatever. It's clear Mulaney is talented but he's not a showrunner (which was obvious when he tried a sitcom career). He could be a talented host of a more organized show, as some have mentioned him as a potential Oscars host but sadly this is not a worthy audition.
