It deserves a sequel, but the dialogues need to be much better, much smarter. Same goes really for the editing. It all needs a bit more umpf. This is almost a film for the Disney channel on cable: for kids until 14 or so. It's because of the slow pace, the empty dialogues, the tedious exposition. The director needs a bit more umpf. And bit more pepper. More urgency! Dakota Johnson is well cast I think but because of her indirect undercooled way of acting she needs to be counterbalanced with a more active editing style and smarter, snappier dialogues. I hope this will continue but it all needs to grow up a bit. It should aiming way above The Disney Channel. It should aim for almost a late night edgy HBO production. Or the director needs to come out of her shell or she needs to be replaced. And ask adult script writers from The Handmaid's Tale or from Severance or from The White Lotus. And then create an exciting roller coaster ride with here and there space for contemplation .... Do that sequel. Take this risk but above all: take it serious!
So well written. My guess is that Paul William Davies will win awards for his writing. So well done. It never bores you and you keep on guessing plus it's hilariously funny at times. And the sets, and the camera and the editing: beautiful. And how the White House is depicted like a human sized dollhouse: it's stunningly gorgeous. And then the whole cast. This whole story is lead by the phenomenal Uzo Aduba. Talking about an Emmy Award worthy performance. She's so so good. And making her an amateur ornithologist is such a good idea and gives the character so much more depth, personality and her believability as a sleuth. The whole casting is really excellent. Well done people. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And the fun thing is that if we really listened well to what the characters were saying we really could have guessed who the murderer was. I enjoyed this on so many levels: acting, sets, camera, script, direction, the humour, the cameo by Kylie Minogue. I binged it in two days. If you close your eyes and you listen to the voice of Uzo Aduba you hear the voice of Oprah Winfrey, the same sound and way of talking. So, if there are plans to make a film or series about the life of Oprah: she should do it. And give her and Davies their well deserved Emmy's. And als the one who is responsible for the effects where we see the White House as a Dollhouse. Just excellent. And I hope we'll get another season, and another and many other seasons.
