I didn't expect much from this movie as I'm a fan of the original book by Kir Bulychev and the 1984 TV version. The first reviews said it had too much action, a superhero-like version of Alisa, too many fights, etc. Surprisingly, I fell in love this version. The main characters are older, but then they are played by a more mature actors who did a great job. Kolya Gerasimov is a fun guy, who never falls into despair, Alisa is very cute, Veselchak U is funny and brutal. The movie is full of well known jokes and memes. It also delivers a very special atmosphere due to optimistic views of the future and unforgetable music theme. Don't pay attention to the surprisingly low rating and give it a try.
This animated adaption of the Liu Cixin's book has a surprisingly low rating. I guess, the reason is that many fans of the original story didn't like that it's got too far from the book. What they probably don't know is that this adaptation is actually a mix of two Liu Cixin's books: 'The Three-Body Problem' ('The Dark Forest' to be exact) and less known 'Ball Lightning'. In my opinion, it was a rather interesting idea to take the best of the two stories and create the one with new twists and a fresh ending. Watching apaptations that are too close to the original books sometimes can be boring because you already know the story. For those who still prefer the original, there is a Chinese TV series that started last year. The animation itself is pretty good, the main characters are well elaborated, and the plot twists are fun to follow.
It's been a very long time since I've read the book, so it's a bit vague in my memory now. Then, I watched this movie, and all I saw here was a mix of revenge and jihad for... something (better Universe, perhaps?) Shallow idea, keeping in mind how often revenge and juhad led to wars and disasters in human history. Now, I've just seen the Villeneuve's version, and it's SOOOO much better. I see a deep thought here: young Paul forsees his destiny and struggles with it. This is what it should've been. Was it in the book? Gone to reread it.
