One of the things I've hated about Star Trek from the very beginning is common beings, mortal shall we say, defeating omnipotent beings. I never liked Trelane and absolutely hate Q. These are a series of stupid episodes which this one continues the tradition of. Star Trek is mostly for adults (See: the brilliant ANDOR for an example of Adult Science Fiction). This is Star Drek, and is weak as anything badly written. This is down there with the amphibian episode of Voyager, Move Along Home from DS9, And the Children Shall Lead from the original series. Just bad all around. It isn't funny. It isn't interesting. It's a cheap mish-mash of other terrible episodes. Please, just stop stupid rip-off episodes like this! People are crying that SNW will end with season 5. If this is the best the writers can do, just end it this year!
A poor way to begin the third season. I know, as a Trek fan since 1966, who calls himself a TREKKIE (A Trekker is someone walking across the African Veldt) I'm considered an anomaly. A throwback. DS9 was the last great series. Nothing has come close since then. The terrible Enterprise, which this is certainly in the same time line as, got Rick Berman fired. I keep hoping trash like Discovery and Picard will get Kurtzman fired. I do like, mostly, SNW, however, I don't like either of these episodes, which totally wreck Trek history. Go watch ARENA. One of the best episodes of the original show (without which none of us would be talking about this show). Gorn are bipedal, no tails. They are cold blooded, but can be seen on Federation sensors (one of the dumbest ideas in SNW. Federation sensors can find virtually anything, even if they can't identify it, but Gorn can hide? And, being organic creatures, not the Borg, phasers don't affect them?) and their weapons aren't overpowering, or the Gorn ship that destroyed Cestus 3 wouldn't have run. Turning them into velociraptors was another silly idea. The look is terrible, like a reject from Face Off. What is it with new Treks thinking they can reinvent the wheel? First those chandelier wearing Klingons, now the Gorn? And they're also xenomorphs now? Needing another species to lay their eggs in? The smaller Gorn spinning ships looked like they were looted from the Chig fighters in the way too short, Space: Above and Beyond. What other ideas will these writers loot for this show? Unfortunately, the writers took the old SCIFI trope and saved his girlfriend. This is obviously not the original timeline (Thank's to Berman, Braga's, Abram's and Kurtzman's ridiculous ideas), why not change Pikes future? Will they visit Talos 7? And since he's passively accepting his future doom, why have a relationship with anyone? The entire Spock and Chapel non-romance, is silly. Her love for him was unequited, and outside of weak novels, never returned. Introducing Montgomery Scott was a great idea, the best part of a weak, lifeless episode. I hope he replaces Carol Kane because her voice, or the voice she's using is so annoying. Also, the idea of an immortal race-is she El-Aurien? Is overused. I've accepted that Pike's quarters on the far too many portholes Enterprise is a large as a deck, and having open fires is acceptable on the ship. I've accepted the hideous costumes. The cast of this is far better than Discovery and Anson Mount is really channeling Jeffery Hunter. They should have come up with a new race, rather than misuse the Gorn. Oh, but wait, Voyager (first 3 seasons were so uneven) tried that with the Kazon, who were abandoned because they stunk, Enterprise tried that with the Xindi and that was a total failure. Here's to hoping season 3, which will be delayed by the current strikes will continue being mostly good. And I hope Kurtzman will keep his hands off it.
When will these endless franchises end? Lame stories, with stupid deaths, the only thing worth watching in this was Tony Todd who (weakly) connected this trash with the original lame series. The first movie was like the first Friday the 13th. Interesting and original. Then, like these weak as hell Jurassic park movies (the same movie now what? 15 times? When will science learn?) The deaths in this one, and the terrible depressing ending.... were nearly too much to take. I wasn't in suspense. I wasn't grossed out. I was bored nearly beyond belief. Even my popcorn was bored! PLEASE STOP with the endless sequels. They are just weak as hell. This one was the worst of the bunch.
