There is definitely some parody in the first half or so of the movie, June's character especially. It's definitely meant for people of the current TikTok media influencer generation. The only obvious insider thing is Miranda Cosgrove using her favorite curse word a couple times. For me, it's always fun to see Miranda in something, Beverly D'Angelo is great as always, the rest of the cast does well. Laughed out loud often. Esther Povitsky does more stuff hopefully. Kind of movie that people will remember fondly 10 or 15 years from now, maybe not so much now. Product of it's time, genius will be recognized later.
Sally Field makes this watchable (I don't think she's failed in anything over 50+ years), otherwise an average at best sitcom. Eventually the writing becomes cringe-worthy at times. Gidget was a good starting point for an actual teenager, but I can see where this was hard to overcome.
Given my twisted sense of humor and all the horror movies I've seen, most people who know me would assume anything labeled "horror-comedy" would be right up my alley. Thing is most of those movies suck. Setup-punch line jokes with some gore mixed in. Loved Werewolves Within, no over the top nonsense, no stupid jokes. Everyone plays it straight, and the writing is intelligent. Can tell the actors enjoyed making it, which always helps a movie.
