This action comedy popped up on Amazon prime and seeing as I liked the recent "Heads of state" I thought I'd give it a shot. But outside of some decent action, the movie was lacking.
I also liked Eddie Murphys recent "Beverly Hills cop" comeback but he doesn't get all that much to do here. Its obvious the makers are trying to make this Pete Davidson the highlight. But he's mostly annoying and most of his lines (or the jokes overall) are just cringe.
Still, there are those mostly practical car chases and stunts. So the film isn't a total loss. Just straight to streaming content.

Was highly recommended this and glad I listened. I liked "talk to me" and generally like A24 and horror movies. So should have known this would be right up my street, and it is.
This is a genuinely great arty horror film. It's not all about trying to be scary and jump scares. It's more a disturbing story. A new take on the age old trope of possession, with extra layers that rise it above the usual.
The acting in the movie is phonomenal. Sally Hawkins is the odd step mum who takes in the 2 main characters of the movie. Who are also great. You really care for the main characters and their relationship here as the movies builds its story.
The pacing and directing are great. There's tense, sad, tragic and even some funny moments to ease the tension. As well as a bit of suspected gore.

I was never the biggest Marvel fan. But "fantastic 4 - first steps" looked interesting. I wasn't bothered about some of the changes made, but did question Pedro Pascals random casting. In the end. He's decent in the movie. But i had mixed feelings about the movie itself.
I hope fans love it. But to a casual viewer like me it just felt like they were rushing to the next part of Marvels overall universe. This doesn't feel like a first steps/first movie. More of a build up to later ones. We're introduced to these characters quickly, rush through a long period in their lives, and get this story out of the way quickly so we can move onto the next one. There was a lack of action, and alot of the effects looked quite poor too.
The alternative 60's thing made a nice change though and the cast is pretty likeable. It's just a shame that it feels like we're joining them half way through their story. But what else can you expect when this is the third (or is it even fourth) attempt to do these characters justice.
