It's unfortunately sign of the times that we live in that people are unable to separate the actor from the acting. Mr. De Niro has become a visible and outspoken figure later in life and many who object to his opinions, have decided to use that as the basis attack him for his film choices.
This is a good not great film. I will give you it. It's a little gimmicky to have De Niro in both lead roles, however, it disappeared for me after about 10 minutes of viewing. DeNiro delivers another solid performance, and this film easily fits into his canon of gangster/mobster collective. Written by the same screenwriter as Goodfellas, this film is both true and authentic. Beautiful set in. Pieces abound. I believe any fan of De Niro's other crime movies will enjoy this one just as much.

I have to debate anyone who lists this film as noir. Sure it has a couple elements like noir legend Robert Mitchum and a femme fatale played with flair by Gloria Graham. But this film is mostly an effective medical drama for the first half and only heats up in the last 30 minutes. The cast is absolutely loaded with familiar names and faces like Frank Sinatra, Olivia DeHavalind, Harry Morgan and Broderick Crawford among others. This surely must be among the earliest dramas to so realistically try to recreate a hospital setting as well as that of an operating theatre. Not noir but let's say, noir(ish).
