The thing that made this movie stick in my mind was the incredible sets, and the way the it was filmed. The director used some awesome camera tricks to give a depth to this world that other dream-scape type movies just don't possess. He didn't use any scary monsters, or an abundance of CGI. The monsters are us, and the dreamworld they inhabit stands in stark contrast to the representation of the "real world". Jennifer Lopez looks better than ever in this film, and while she may not be the best actress, I think this movie still pulls it off. D'Onofrio makes a very convincing psycho.
This movie, which time will no doubt prove to be a sleeper, was well put together. The sets look good, and with the exception of the silly looking transport ship in the beginning of the movie, the props and costumes are also well done. I'm surprised that this movie didn't do better in the theaters, given the cast - which all perform marvelously. My favorite part about this movie is the way it explores a Dick theme that Blade Runner fans will no doubt recognize: What makes us human?
It's been 13 years since I saw this movie, but it made such an impact on me that to this day I can close my eyes and visualize the characters, and feel the mood that make this film worth watching. Not too many movies scare me like this one did. It wasn't the use of vast quantities of blood, or the killings that scared me, as much as it was the Ward and June Cleaver-ness of the parents. What really did it for me was the mind twist the director built into this film, and the way it was pulled off by the actors. If you're squeamish then this probably isn't for you, but if you can watch a movie and appreciate it for the art it is, I recommend it.
