No dramaturgie. No editing. No rhythm. No movement. Just a bunch of self-sufficient slice of lives piled on top of each other's.
This film shows a clear lack of understanding for what makes movie making interesting, captivating, to say it plainly, what makes it worthy of attention. This would have been better as a documentary, maybe.
It's an early career film that because of its agenda (for which it is commendable) has been praised way beyond what it deserves. I do not hold it against the director. Everyone has to start somewhere.
Making films is hard. But making interesting films when you refuse to interact with montage AND choreography at the same time while giving politics and emotions through dialogue only, well that's impossible.
I feel that we need queer films that dare to rank among other classics with deep understanding of the medium. As long as "Weekend" remains a standard for queer filmmaking, we won't get there.

Peter Watkins is maybe the most efficient political director ever.
Although his focus points are clear and his opinion may seem apparent, the audience remains able to develop its own thinking all throughout the film. Minutes go by, and more questions come up to you without them ever being explicit in the movie itself. Some problems find answers, but others are yours to deal with.
Very few directors have been able to reach such levels on topics that are as hot as the ones tackled here. A little bit of research on Watkins and his approach to audiovisual communication tells how dangerous his mastership of cinematic technique is.
Whether you agree with his political opinions are not, the man is a genius.
One of the most important filmmakers to have ever lived, and I'm counting them on my two hands only.
