This film is pretentious, self-serving ... I believe the Americans used to say 'up itself'. But they don't seem to say it anymore, presumably because ... I guess people generally have gone so far up themselves people don't see what is even real anymore. The message I get from this film is - photojournalists are pointless because if their remit is "to record so that others act", then clearly photo journalism serves no purpose because the 'others' that are supposed to 'act' having seen what photojournalists 'record', presumably to avoid and prevent such 'things' ever happening, are totally disinterested and don't care - and thus - photojournalists are clearly pointless as the message in this film is they have failed miserably and effect nothing. The other 'thing' I get from the film is that human beings are pointless too ... because they have clearly failed at ... hmmmmm ... everything ... and ... hmmmmm ... they get their deluded jollies from being deluded and insane, mad. So 'why' indeed? Is this the human race in the 21st century? Jolly good??? Mad. Totally lost. Insane. Is this the message. I was also amazed to see that in all the apparent chaos, fast/convenience food is still coming 'packaged' in planet-killing compressed foam ... and some people are really just born cr*p at driving. Dystopian is an understatement. I could go on but my usual opinion arrives at - 250 thousand years of human evolution leads to this!
I struggle to find words to express how perfect this production is. I suppose I miss the actual ending as Lampedusa's book and it's focus (for me anyway) on Bendico. Everything about this series is however, so, so perfect and perfectly reflects the story and the sentiment and melancholy of it all. Everything that you could possibly think of that goes into the making and performing of any production, was just utterly perfect. Sublime. Exquisite. Haunting. I was pretty much in tears with the ending as it was and suspect if the series ended as the book, I think I'd be in a state of mourning for weeks and months to come. For all those invoked, thankyou all so much for such a beautiful, beautiful program.
Watched this on TV ... on a random evening .. in a random week ... in a random time if the year ... and it was ... the only thing on that was ... I thought ... bearable to watch. It was not ... bearable. I think the intention was a mix of regret, melancholy, nostalgia? I don't know, I'm just guessing. By the way the 'red' art splatter in the wall, was like the aftermath of some terrible horror event. Luckily I wasn't invested in this film watching experience at all. I had my tea with my family in another room, while it was on and I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything. The son was a spoilt brat all not grown up. Qui Gon Gin was ok. But it was a rubbish story we've all seen told much much much better before in a much much much better film!!! Maybe my criticism is that this film was an accurate-ish telling of the reality of finding one's self in such a situation and thus it was an accurate reflection of how lame most of us are. But we don't watch films to be reminded of how lame we all are and how lame our lives are ... so we. Must try harder.
