Tasteless adaption of a great beat novel. The big MGM studio setup is not suited for a story like this. A low budget B/W Noir style, would have suited the story better.
I decided to see this film because of two things; Sturges & Eastwood.
I really liked "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral", and once again Sturges maked an O.K. but not fantastic western. The characters of this movie is not as fantastic steriotyped as the on in "Once upon a Time in the West" - but then agian who are?
"Joe Kidd" is Clint Eastwoods return to westerns from the Dirty Harry secual, and luckuly Joe Kidd is not as bitter as Harry Callahan. The good old charming Clint is back, and the chicks love it; aften talking to Duvall's girl for about 30 seconds Kidd kisses her wich makes her ask how long he has been in jail - he answers someting like: "For two days - it it had been two months we woundn't have been talking this long"(!).
The plot is classic; lonely gunman teams up with bad guy(Duvall), changes his mind and goes against the bad guy. Classic and good. Just like the ending contains one funny detail.
