The acting is top-notch, the story too. But then again, any individual opposed to organized religion will absolutely love this movie. The 3 major religions all say someone (an ordinary person)will be "chosen" to intervene & save the lives of others, and will then pass this power on to someone else. That is the crux of this story. All the main characters are(alternatively)intrigued and threatened by the patient who knows their story. What to do? Commit him, or hear what he has to say? It's the challenge the Bible says we must all one day face. At the end of the day, it's discovered that PJ's there to help others and not snare them. I loved it!
3.6 rating? Must be my white brethren. The movie, as a morality tale, clearly makes the cut. Even though nefarious characters lend a hand, the overall message is still pretty clear: You need the community to see you through. Who's going to help you through the greed and missteps of your neighborhood.. Opie?? Sure, there were some things that were unrealistic (oh, gimme a break scenes). But the film still entertained, and communicated the eternal truth: that winning the lottery doesn't change you, it changes the people around you. Ice Cube was great, as was the entire cast. Hats off to the director, actors, and writer of this film.
Honor Adrienne Shelley- RENT or BUY this movie. It's a beautiful film, to be thoroughly enjoyed by all. As a filmmaker, I can attest that there isn't an amateurish "second" in this movie. The writing, acting and directing are flawless. God only knows the heights Ms. Shelley would have ultimately achieved. The next Chaplin? Andy Griffith, is terrific! (so how much was that check for?).
What was so unique was the deference Ms. Shelley displayed toward her characters. Yes, even Earl. I can't imagine any other scenario, other than the powers in Hollywood stepping over each other and scrambling for her services.
