I was honestly expecting worse. To be fair, it wasnt infufferably gross and annoying like i thought it was going to be, it was just mediocre. Its not on "ren and stimpy adult party cartoon" levels of bad is what im saying. To the films credit, there was actually a few semi-decent jokes here and there. Not a whole lot but there were a few moments that did get a slight chuckle out of me. The story was at least properly structured and they had real, genuine character arcs and goals, not that this is some shakespeare masterpiece or anything, but at least its something. One of the weirder problems of this movie however is that the pacing is just way too slow. Its weird, because normally these kinds of movies are extremely hyperactive and all-over-the-place, but this one was such a drag. Every single scene in this movie just drags on for way longer than it needs to, it feels like it could have easily been edited down to 50 minutes, its like "ok yeah, i get it, can we please move on now?" also, i find it funny how the animators think they can show pairs of grapes front and center perfectly fine, but they cant show eggplants or tacos for some reason (using euphamisms so that IMDB doesnt reject my review, not actually talking about food if you didnt get the memo.) the majority of the comedy is just bland and lame. Its not as atrocious as i thought it would be, but its by no means actually "good"
Its a solid movie. It was a little underwhelming but they did good with it. The acting from all of the actors was all very good. The chemistry between the two main characters was definitely the best part of the movie for me, and they did a really good job of portraying simons mental state. It was pretty good for the first 2 acts, but the third act is kinda where it fell apart. Theres no reason why they couldnt have just gone to the police after what happened in eds house. I get it, theyre saying that the cops "wont believe him" but do you really think they wouldnt bat an eye after seeing the aftermath of what happened there? Not spoiling it but im just saying, they wouldnt have just shrugged off something like that. The ending was pretty underwhelming. There was no climax or anything, they just resolved the movie and that was it. It was decent, if they had just given the movie a better ending and gave the characters a real reason not to go to the police, it would be great. But its just... ehhh.
Overall, its a solid adaptation. The movie stayed pretty faithful to the original, and the few changes they made (mostly minor dialogue tweaks) didnt hurt the film and was in fact welcome. The set design, CGI, and characters were all pretty faithful to the original and the CGI was pretty good. Theres just one big problem with it, the acting is horrible. Gerard butler is legitimately the only actor in this movie who actually felt convincing the entire time. Some characters performances were ok sometimes, but most of the time it just felt like i was watching a high school play. Its a step in the right direction for live action adaptations, everything other than the performances was good, but that one thing just made me lose investment in the movie.
