  • A good start to the legendary superhero series or Good Mutants vs Evil Mutants: Part one

A fantastic action movie. An adaptation of Marvel comics, which Twentieth Century Fox studios began making long before the Evil Corporation. We don't give a damn about these comics (we don't read them, we don't like them, and we even despise them a little), so we absolutely don't care what was in these very original comics of yours, because we judge solely by this series of paintings that were published in the first quarter of the new, twenty-first century. Moreover, we watched all the parts of this series, and this review was a great reason to review them, because these paintings are not outdated for a day, and the problems they raise are relevant and very difficult to solve, even on the scale of a fictional fantasy universe. We still appreciate and respect the first part, which launched this series. And here's a brief opinion - A good start to the legendary superhero series. There were both advantages and disadvantages in the picture (there is no way without them). Therefore, you should finish this important introduction and move on to the interesting one.

So, the advantages: 1. Scenario - in the near future, people will face an important question, because mutants (a new stage of evolution) have begun to gain strength and whether people should be afraid of them. After all, part of the mutants wants to subjugate humans, it is led by Magneto, and the other part of the mutants stands on moderate positions and advocates an alliance with humans, it is led by Professor Xavier. He also organized a shelter for mutants who are not welcome anywhere else. It is in this institution that Wolverine (a fierce warrior with a vague past) and Rogue (a girl with a very dangerous ability if she falls into the wrong hands) find themselves. Wolverine doubts his new companions, but further events make it clear that Professor Xavier and his students are good people. The finale of the picture hints at a clear sequel (which happened due to the box office success). At the same time, the local scenario strongly resembles the picture of an adventure, where, on behalf of Wolverine, we get acquainted with the local universe and try to understand who is a friend and who is an enemy.

    2. Characters - Wolverine, Xavier, Storm, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Magneto, Mystic and so on. They are all interesting and memorable. Not only do they differ greatly in appearance, but each has its own character. It is interesting to observe their communication and behavior with each other. The most interesting (and beloved by us and many others) is, of course, Wolverine (aka Logan), on whose behalf we mostly observe what is happening. They perfectly conveyed the difficult relationship between Xavier and Magneto (Eric), who are clearly connected by friendship and a common past (which we will learn about from further paintings in the series).

    3. Costumes and decorations - everything is done quite well and looks great. It is clear that a substantial part of the budget was spent on this part of the film production, and it was worth it. Although there are very few fights here, nevertheless, the creators were clearly accelerating in this regard.

    4. Humor - Logan is the source of the most deadly jokes and jokes here, of course, but the rest are trying to keep up. Cyclops makes jokes at times. The local humor here is sometimes hilarious and dilutes the rather serious narrative quite well.

    5. Gray morality - it is from this picture that it can be traced, and it will only escalate further, because Magneto and Xavier's arguments are very convincing and it is difficult to argue with them. And although the creators are clearly trying to win us over to Xavier's side, nevertheless, the audience here can reflect on this for themselves and decide for themselves who is right here.

So, the disadvantages: 1. Stupidities and blunders - this is due to the use of superpowers of characters during fights or in other key places. They are especially noticeable during the final battle, where stupidity drives stupidity and stupidity. These shoals will be in all parts of the series, because there is no getting away from it.

    2. Where did Xavier get the money for school and all the gadgets? - they won't answer this question here, although they should have asked this question. And Logan should have been the one to ask. It seems that the professor is not a billionaire, then where does the money come from? The government? There are doubts.

And don't forget that the first part was Hugh Jackman's debut as Logan. It's hard to imagine this image without him now. Patrick Stewart (Xavier) and Ian McCullen (Magneto), Famke Jassen (Jean Grey) and Halle Berry starred well as Storm.

As already mentioned, the film became a box office success, so in 2003 the studio released a sequel, but we'll talk about it next time.

Rating 7 out of 10 and recommended for viewing!

  • The story of composer Johann Strauss or The Good American Musical of the late thirties of the last century

The musical. And we learned about this picture from the DVD "Legends of Cinema" (which had another wonderful picture "Serenade of Sunny Valley", which we wrote a review about the previous time). We also recommend viewing these collections themselves, because they contain excellent paintings from the time when cinema was an art, and the paintings themselves are almost entirely masterpieces, albeit with primitive technologies of those years, but nevertheless. So, the painting "The Big Waltz", which Comrade Stalin loved to watch and review. We watched it too, and not without pleasure. And it was worth it. And here's a brief opinion - A good American musical from the late thirties of the last century. We would like to note right away that there are no flaws in the painting, but there are some comments that we will consider in a separate paragraph, but for now let me focus your attention on the expressive advantages of this painting.

So, here they are: 1. The script - the picture shows and tells the story of one of the "classical" composers, the Austrian Johann Strauss, the author of the famous waltzes "Tales of the Viennese Forest", "Blue Danube", "Spring Voices" and so on. We will see the composer's creative path, how he went from being a banker to what he became. There will be a love triangle between him, his beloved wife, who supported him from the very beginning, Poldi, and the famous opera singer Carla Donner, who paved the way for Strauss to fame. In addition, Carla was his muse for a long time, thanks to whom Johann wrote many of his famous waltzes. We will see the life of this composer (it has little to do with reality). The finale will delight you with a very noble act by one of the key characters, not to mention the final scene, which is staged and filmed just wonderfully.

    2. Costumes and decorations - the decorations, for the most part, are made quite well. It is understood that everything was filmed in the pavilion, but still the "magic of cinema" feels like Vienna in the middle of the nineteenth century. But the costumes are beautiful. Styles, variety, aesthetically pleasing to look at all this. Needless to say, a lot of pictures were shot in Hollywood in the thirties, especially historical ones, so the costumers had their hands full, as they say. And all the costumes "fit" the actors.

    3. Music and songs - we will hear the famous waltzes and their early versions (as they were presented by the script authors), as well as the songs themselves, almost all performed by Carla Donner, who has a very memorable voice, for which many thanks to actress Milica Korjus. It's absolutely shameless to dance to these songs and waltzes.

Now about some remarks. English inscriptions are very difficult to perceive (fortunately, they are found mainly in the first half of the picture). Strauss's relationship with his father is shown to be the opposite. Poldi - Strauss did not have such a wife, he was married three times. And this is only a part of those moments that the picture distorted or did not mention at all. This is normal for a work of art, so you should not trust it.

A little bit about the main characters: 1. Johann Strauss, played by Fernand Gravey, is a talented composer torn between his muse and his faithful wife. A banker who became a famous composer of the music that we still listen to. A brave, determined man, perfectly played by Fernand Gravey.

    2. Carla Donner, played by Milica Korjus, is a famous Viennese opera diva of those years, who by her decision paved the way for young Johann to dream and fame. And she fell in love with him. Johann couldn't resist her charms, and few people could resist, to be honest with you. The militia is amazing here. She sings and plays the role of a domineering diva. Bravo!

    3. Poldi Vogelhuber, played by Louise Rainer, is Strauss's damn beautiful and smart enough wife, without whom he would not have been able to succeed as a composer, because in some matters he is a complete ignoramus. It's nice to look at her all the time on the screen, but listening is generally a pleasure. Bravo Louise, bravo!

Despite the primitive technologies of those years, for example, combined filming, we sincerely recommend that you familiarize yourself with this picture. Which is artistically done superbly.

A score of 8 out of 10 and a recommendation to watch!

  • Romance at a ski resort or the Wonderful American musical comedy of 1941

A musical romantic comedy. This picture first came to our attention a long time ago, when we had in our hands a DVD from the "Legends of Cinema" collection (in which four paintings were recorded on one disc, usually from the 20s, 30s and 40s of the last century in acceptable quality and it was done under license and recorded in the factory, and not like the pirate on dummies now), where in addition to this picture there were "The Big Waltz" (the review will be next), "Duck Soup" and "Alexander's Ragtime Band". But only the first three paintings attracted our attention, and now, after a long-awaited viewing, we are ready to write a review about the first one. And here is a brief opinion - A wonderful American musical comedy of 1941. And we want to note right away that there were no flaws in the picture (with the exception of the "fabulousness" of the story as a whole, but the laws of the genre are to blame here, there's nothing you can do about it). Therefore, we will focus your attention on the advantages of this film production.

So, here they are: 1. The script - the picture tells about a classic love triangle that begins in New York between Ted Scott, the pianist of a talented orchestra, his lover and singer Vivienne Dawn and his "ward" Ted, a refugee from Norway, Karen Benson, and continues to the famous ski resort Sunny Valley. There will be humor, dancing, and songs, a light romantic comedy atmosphere, and a happy ending that is easily guessed closer to the middle of the picture. Great acting, no unnecessary scenes. Of course, we will be shown the ski activities themselves (which played an exceptionally good role after the success of the picture). The script is simple, and it certainly doesn't pull for an Oscar, but it will definitely cheer you up and charge you with good energy.

    2. Humor - it's simple and simple here, but that doesn't make it any less funny. Especially the funny moment in the hut. Well, the supporting character Nifty Allen adds his charm.

    3. Musical numbers are the basis of the picture. I would especially like to mention the local polka and the dance number performed by the Nicholas brothers (the latter are just great fellows, because the number was very difficult and very traumatic, but they coped). The Polka turned out to be quite funny, light and even passionate. This should be noted. The rest of the rooms are good too.

    4. Atmosphere - this musical romantic comedy screams its entertainment value. It doesn't touch on other topics, it shows an ordinary romantic comedy with interesting characters, with a happy ending. There are not enough stars from the sky, but it allows you to fully immerse yourself in the twists and turns of the characters and enjoy the beautiful views of the snow-capped mountains. Not much, but nice.

As for the Glenn Miller orchestra and the songs in general, in our subjective opinion, they are average, and the music is for a jazz lover. Those who like to watch immediately, the rest - well, then decide for yourself. At that time, many people in the USA were crazy about this music, now it's hard to say how this is the case.

A little bit about the main characters: 1. Ted Scott, played by John Payne, is a brave and talented musician who loved a famous singer, but after a ridiculous incident everything changed, because he met a Norwegian immigrant who turned out to be so talented and interesting that now he is torn between them. John is shown to be a rather modest, intelligent, sometimes assertive and noble man. It doesn't seem to be anything outstanding, but there is still a certain zest. Bravo!

    2. Vivien Dawn, played by Lynn Bari, is a famous singer who brought Ted's orchestra to Sunny Valley. She looks sweet and innocent, although with a character, but later it becomes clear that this lady is treacherous and the first impression was deceptive. Lynn was a great success in this role, Vivien just reeks of a dangerous scent, with her beauty. Bravo!

    3. Karen Benson, played by Sonya Henie, is an enthusiastic girl who fell in love with Ted at first sight, a talented athlete, and went to Sunny Valley for the sake of her lover. He shows his character and ingenuity in order to achieve his goal. Damn charming, restless, and beautiful. Sonya Nut is just a miracle! And her performance on the ice is fantastic. Bravo, Sonya, bravo!

This picture was shown in the USSR, and twice (in 1944 and in 1961), and the Soviet audience accepted it well, which says a lot. And looking at this picture now, it's clear why it was so well received.

A score of 8 out of 10 and a recommendation to watch!
