Jayabharati is the only daughter of a rich man . She returns home from college with her close friend Srilatha .

Her father wants her to marry soon as he is suffering from ill health . Unsure about the prospectus groom Jayan , she brings simpleton village bumpkin Prem Nazir as her lover.

She had met him while travelling back home . He is of course surprised but agrees after some misgivings. His mother ( whom he adores) says that he should help any one and every one without understanding his real situation. Being simple , he takes it as her advice and agrees to play along with JB .

She dresses and trains him to impress her father .

Enamored by his daughter's choice , he agrees immediately.

The first half is a comedy of errors. Jayan and his mother Sukumari are very unhappy at this development .

JB's family is very happy with her choice . Her father soon announces that his would be SIL will inherit all his wealth.

Even JB is shocked at this . Meanwhile a stung Jayan goes around digging about PN's past. He find out about his simple meagre status and informs his mother about her son's actions.

Unable to belive that her son can cheat some one , she comes to the mansion to see for herself .

PN refuses to recognize her . He does not want to antagonize JB's father .

Stunned at this , she dies of shock.

JB becomes a changed man after this . Filled with remorse JB tries to console him .

JB and Srilatha look ridiculous with bob cut wigs and tight tops with bell bottom pants in the first half .

Prem Nasir is a rich single man . He often feels lonely but is wary of gold diggers around him. He hears Srividya sing one day . She is from a poor family . She often dreams of marrying in a rich family as she has seen poverty . Paralelly being very helpful in nature PN keeps helping a poor painter Soman .

Prem Nazir falls for simple cotton clad Srividya and asks her hand in marriage to her drunkyard father .

Enamored by his luck he agrees. Srividya too agrees instantly rocked by his multi millionaire status . They have a daughter soon . Thrilled at her luck , She usually is decking up herself even to the extent of ignoring her own daughter. The maids and servants keep cautioning her but she relents .

Proud and arrogant of her status , she carries on with her new found money and status.

Soman is always respectful of SV . Prem Nasir and Soman become close friends . They visit the next town where PN gets an attack suddenly .

Soman breaks the sad news of his death to Srividya. She is more shocked than sad at first but happy at her large inheritance.

She goes back to her life of debauchary very soon . She does not pay attention to her own child busy with herself .

The child dies soon pining for her daddy .

Remorseless SV carries on with her parties and socialising .

Seeing his chance , Soman slowly creeps in her life . Prem Nasir meanwhile is not dead . He manages to get medical aid . He comes back in their lives incognito . He is shocked to find that Soman and Srividya are planning to marry after the mourning period .

Aghast at his own selection of his wife and close friend , he starts his game of revenge . He manages to lure SV again with diamonds and silks . She falls for him easily looking at his rich status sidelining Soman . He breaks the news in public that he will be marrying the widow SV .

When Soman comes to know this , he is angry as his own treasure and property slipping out of his hand . In the final scene, there is a confrontation between the three . SV goes insane . Soman shoots himself . Jayabharati has a small role as the house help who is aware of everything but is help less. She takes care of the child during SV's absence .

Even with the artificial wig and beard with heavy dark glasses PN manages to show his disdain and all emotions very clearly .

Swathed in silks chiffons & jewels Srividya is beauty personified . She plays this role of an avaricious selfish wife very easily . Its a pleasure watching her .

Soman and JB are fine in their small roles.

Pramila and Raghavan are a 2 year old childless couple. She suffers his infidelities silently . He is careless casual and does not heed to her at all. Since he is the head of the village , the poor villagers suffer him silently .

Soman , his friend and also his farm hand tries to caution him many times in vain .

Bhavani is a cute good looking girl from a low status back ground .

Raghavan , lusting after her offers her a job in his farm.

Her mother Adoor Bhavani innocently believes him and sends her daughter off to work there .Though Bhavani is aware of his schemes , due to poverty and her mother's failing health she decides to go and work for Raghavan .

Meanwhile a parallel story we see a young Silk Smita falling prey to a predator despite Soman trying to help her out many times . This makes Soman wary and aware .

Soman's father Jagathi himself was a victim a few years back . His wife , Soman's mother had died after being molested by Raghavan's father ( the Village head man ) .

Prameela is not the quietly suffering wife for long . We see her drinking alcohol from her husband's collection to spite him. She also lures Soman as a revenge showing that two can play the game .

When Soman wishes to marry Bhavani she refuses as she has had enough of male attentions . She gives in when Jagathy intervenes . Raghavan and his father both keep eyeing Bhavani . Soman is usually sent away on farm work . Jagathy is aware of whats going on .

In the end , Jagathy is killed by , Raghavan's father . The villain is killed by Soman .

The blame is taken by another of his victims who held a grudge against this headman family since long . Soman and a changed Bhavani unite. Prameela and a redeemed Raghavan unite . A story set in a village talking about complex human needs and relations . Prameela looks resplendent in silks and jewels as a rich woman .

Bhavani wears cottons mostly and looks young and fresh .
