First, let me say like most people who have reviewed this movie, the book is 1000 times better. I have no idea why someone read Jay Bell's book Something Like Summer and decided 'oh this would be a great musical". It's not. They could have delved more into the actual story and plot of the book and done without all of the songs, which take up so much unnecessary time rather than developing the love between the two main characters. The first time I saw this was at the gay film festival in Atlanta and there was a Q&A with the Director and the cast afterwards. I never got a chance to ask why in the hell they ruined such a great book by making this movie a musical adaptation. For anyone unfamiliar I would watch this and then go read the book. Otherwise you're going to be extremely disappointed.
The only reason why I watched this movie was because I was trapped on a plane and had seen most everything else available. I thought it was very slow and at times didn't understand why they were long pauses with nothing going on. Priscilla, looking out the window longingly I guess was to signify her wanting to escape from the house? Admittedly, I have not read Priscilla Presley's book about her life, but it looks like she's sort of knew what she was getting into before she married Elvis. Thinking he's going to change after they got married was foolish on her part and again I'm just basing this off of the movie, from what I understand while the movie is based on her book, it was not sanctioned by Presley enterprises, which makes me curious about the accuracy. Regardless, I thought it was very boring and was pleased when it ended.
I was very eager to watch this movie because I live in Savannah and was here while it was being filmed. The town was in a buzz because of Julian Moore and Natalie Portman being here during the filming, I always enjoy seeing movies set in the city where I live. But then I actually watched the movie and it is terrible I disregarded the reviews from people who had already seen it when they told me it was horrible, but I should have listened. It was just as bad as everyone said. I don't know that there was any point to making this film at all. I'm sure it will win a lot of awards because of the acting I suppose because most bad movies win awards. But there's no reason this film was made at all. It's dull and slow and pointless. It's funny that IMDb asks if this review contains spoilers... There are no spoilers to be made. This is just a bad movie.
