  • A Cult Masterpiece

Well there are a lot of movies dealing with this subject that is relationship between a parent and a child. Where they would highlight several misunderstandings between the parent and the child. But this film had an intense touchy mood by the content it provided.

The story goes like this Amudhavan (The character played by Mammooty) is dejected after his wife abandons him and their child (Played by Sadhana), who has cerebral palsy. He struggles to take care of his daughter as she is about to enter her puberty while society constantly rejects him.

The mood of the film is kept monotonous and in several sequences there are no dialogues too. But this bond of a struggling father and a spastic child didn't need a dialogue to enhance the situation. The expressions were enough to highlight such a beautiful relationship. Moreover, the movie is narrated in a unique manner. A chapter wise narration, were each and every chapter is personified with the contrast of nature. The second brilliant thing about this movie was the performances. Sadhana as the spastic girl and Mammooty as a father stole the whole show. I have never seen someone performing with such brilliance at a very young age which Sadhana did, with much ease and confidence. Mammooty too gave a spectacular performance. I remember in one of the sequences he tried to imitate his own daughter and later confessed that it is really brutal to compare one person with another. I think this scene should be categorized as one of the most iconic scenes in the history of Indian Cinema. Each chapter personified with the contrast to nature showcased how we as people exploit such human beings as if they are a burden to us. And also showed many shades of human nature. Moreover, the thing which will captivate you more is this father who just wants his kid to remain happy. And a spastic kid dealing with her puberty.

Talking about the technical aspects, the Cinematography of the movie is great. From the riverside shots till the distorted vision through the perspective of a spastic girl is something which should be appreciated. Moreover, in several sequences the father-daughter moments captured in slow motion is something which holds up the innocence of this movie. The editing too is great were the transition in between few chapters is done using a fog sequence through the river.

I personally loved this movie. And will highly highly recommend. The movie has a different kind of magic which will surely shape you as a human being.

  • An Offbeat yet effective attempt.

A very hard hitting plot highlighted and presented with simplicity and generosity. Setting up home in a war like situation is not easy but the makers didn't disappoint us in any aspect. I am regretting the fact that I am watching this movie so lately. One thing I need to say is that though there was a political aspect, innocence throughout the movie was intact. And the writting of the script is really done brilliantly were each and every character has a backstory. And the camera work was too good. The whole situation recorded within the 4 walls of the house. The main highlight of the whole movie is the performances. From a caring sister, a beloved mother, an overprotective grandmother and most importantly a dad who can go to any extent just to see a smile on his son's face. I personally loved the movie and will highly highly recommend it. Its a political drama executed in a simple manner which is rarely seen. So if you miss it, you will probably miss one of the best works.

  • A Pure Musical and Visual Retreat with a loose screenplay.

An offbeat love story between a Sufi Saint and mute Hindu girl which I was extremely excited to watch. From the plot till narration style everything was great. But what I didn't get was the magic of the screenplay. It may be because I am too obsessed with Mani Ratnam's work that I search his unique magic in every love story. So, the main highlight of the whole film were the performances especially the chemistry between the two lead characters Dev Mohan as a Sufi Saint with an infectious smile and non other than Aditi Rao Hydari as mute girl with a unique charm. The expressions delivered by her in few frames are just phenomenal, I remember last time I enjoyed the same charm was in Mani Ratnam's Kaatru Veliyidai. Moreover, the visuals and locations in contrast with the addictive music are really great. Especially, the camera work of each and every minute details from the frame. Be it a drone shot of a Sufi dance or the close up shot of a longing girl. But the thing which could have been better was the Screenplay. If the Screenplay would have been a little better then this would have stand out from the rest of the Romantic Fairy Tales. Moreover, the idea, the attempt and the performances were great. You can give it a watch as a visual retreat.
