  • Great for your future self (Must read!)

The dvd box claims this is "The classic 80's sci-fi sex romp!" Too bad it came out in 1994.

It's called Test Tube Teens from the Year 2000... except they're from 2019... but most of the movie takes place in 1994...

Can somebody help Full Moon figure out what day it is?

Anyway, the DeCoteauthon continues. This time we follow two dudes from a future where the world is under corporate rule...and...gasp...they've banned sex! They get caught up with the rebellion and about two minutes later they stumble upon a time machine and go back in time to change the future.

Luckily for teenage boys everywhere that mission takes them back to a girls' school and everyone knows there are lots of b**bs at a girls' school...and we see just about all of them along with a few beaver shots too all while our two heroes set out to destroy Morgan Fairchild.

This is probably the least g*y of any DeCoteau movie I've seen so far...but even still there's a Skinemax style soft core s*x scene stuck in the middle here and we see everything but his junk...in full sweaty detail. There's a beautiful off clothed girl in the scene too... if you're into that sort of thing (yes you are!)

They also go to a nightclub where the security guys are oiled up shirtless guys in short shorts.

And at that nightclub the two guys go all dirty dancing on each other even though they both have beautiful love interests about 3 feet away.

And the guys are dressed in women's clothing for 75% of the movie.

I almost forgot about the blatant Terminator ripoff in the form of a future cyborg cop who comes back in time to catch the rebel boys. He even says "I'll be back" in case you didn't get the "reference" immediately when he showed up. Then they reprogram him to be helpful... where do they come up with this stuff?

It's no Sorority Babes but it was fun... and Morgan Fairchild lays a robot... so at least there's that (and there's that!)

  • Depressing art? (Come see)

THERE WAS A 3D RELEASE OF THIS? WHAT THE FRIDGE POPS!

HOLY MOZERS this is NOT a film to be enjoyed on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It's a film which directly cums so hard on the audience they broke through the effing aspect ratio (that actually happens), but SOMEHOW at the same time it's a raw, deep and soulful question on our own morality about our commitment to other people. I'm not sure how it works as well as it does, but it does.

Love may feel like a feature length p-rn, and yes the amount of sex is a little excessive, but it's clearly not what the film is about, or even remotely intended to be. The emotional trauma and intensity of this relationship is what drives the film and it's themes in a way that feels so incredibly interesting.

Gaspar Noé never seemed to lose the main focus of the film, and consequently builds the film up in quite a haunting and disturbing way towards the end, and not in the way you would expect. It's strangely one of the most accurate modern love stories ever made.

I think I may be the first person to compare these films - but to me it felt like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, in the similar aspect of reliving memories of a past love, and experiencing it's emotional trauma it can carry with you after, and how it can effect long lasting grief in a way of loosing someone. It's exactly like that film in a way when you think about it, expect if they were just LAYING THE ENTIRE RUNTIME.

After giving Climax a 5/5, it's safe to say i'm starting to like Gaspar Noé as a director! Wait... am I allowed to say that?

  • Classic nostalgia trip. We need a modern remake!

Part of me hopes against hope this movie is hiding in an unmarked film can. You see, though most Carlos Tobalina adult movies from the 1980s have been re-released by Vinegar Syndrome, SEXUAL ODYSSEY is missing in action. The other part of me wonders why I care as this is pretty uneven for even a Tobalina movie, which of course exist in some alternate universe.

The plot is admirably demented - Jerry Butler plays a confirmed homosexual (!!) who goes to Dr. Carlos (listed as "Dr. Karlof" in the pressbook but you're not fooling anyone Dr. Carlos) for conversion treatment. I wonder if Tobalina even realized this admittedly ridiculous idea actually existed? At least Dr. Carlos' method is more benign than the real thing. These parts are the source of much mirth, including both Tobalina and Butler attempting to pronounce the word "fecal." It's completely offensive but totally unaware of its offensiveness.

If you're wondering, hey, how do I know how Tobalina's character is listed in the pressbook, there's a reason and it's a doozy. It's because SEXUAL ODYSSEY credits most of its cast and crew by simply displaying the pressbook on-screen! What's more, the film's title is conveyed via the poster rather than, you know, actual titles. It makes you wonder if Carlos ran out of money in the budget, or if he changed things around at the very last minutes. With Tobalina, who can really know?

The cast is mostly amazing, with rare Tobalina appearances from Butler, Amber Lynn (wearing one of the CASANOVA 2 wigs for some reason), Nikki Charm, Rachel Ashley, Karen Summer, and Joanna Storm. Longtime Carlos favorite Mai Lin is also on-hand. Sadly, the sex scenes are soooo protracted that they get a bit tiresome. I would have liked a little more idiotic plot to balance things. I mean, Jerry never appears in the same scene with the guy playing his brother!

There are some creative touches though. The sex in front of a rear projection idea makes a return from THE ULTIMATE PLEASURE (I think it was that one). Very stirring to watch Nikki Charm climb on top of Jerry Butler with an image of the Statue of Liberty in the background. Ashley and Summer conclude their scene with Butler by clapping and chanting "Amen!" for reasons that are not entirely clear, but evidently indicate successful therapy. I dunno, it's Carlos.
