Park Ji-hu plays Gim Bom a student that is a talented songwriter whose mother died in a mysterious car accident. A new student at her school Sa-gye (Ha Yoon-joon) had a cornea transplant but went on to become a famous pop star with a group called the crown. He has returned to education because after an altercation with his manager he is fired from the band. We learn over time why the two leads have underlying links from the past. Once at school we have the usual bullying and drama as bonds and bands are formed. I have given it a 7 but it is closer to 6.5 as even though the acting and interactions between the cast are good the plot is incredibly weak and childish.
Yoshine Kyoko plays Ebata Natsumi a quiet and reserved daughter of the Sekiya family whose father comes home one day and tells her he has arranged her marriage. On the day of the Ceremony her groom Ebata Takimasa (Honda Kyoya) is represented by a picture as he is a serving Naval officer and out at sea on the day. When she eventually meets him he is stiff and remote as due to his upbringing he has trouble relating to people or showing emotion. Over the course of ten episodes we see the tentative relationship slowly thaw and the pair develop genuine feelings for each other although they never lose formality. It also has a second couple who are the polar opposite of the shy couple and with their confidence they make an interesting alternative romance. I would give it an 8.5 as the writing and the outstanding acting of the lead couple is truly captivating.
The series is based on a novel by Choi Jung-mi published in 2008 about the life of a famous concubine in the Chosun dynasty. The concubine Jang Ok-jun is played by Kim Tae-hee and king Sukjong is played by Yoo Ah-in who both do a good job alongside the supporting cast.
Sadly I think the script is weak as it concentrated too much on the doomed love rather then the court subterfuge. This lack of development of the villains left it like it was just a number of events loosely cobbled together to move the story along. It was entertaining but could have been so much better with a few less inept characters.
