It's confusing seeing all these raving reviews from users and critics alike.
I feel like I watched something else. Cult following is never good, even for charismatic persons.
The characters are uninteresting. The setting is bizarre, we are in the middle of WWII and the feeling is like there is some festival happening somewhere in the country and not nukes dropping and evaporating people. I guess the subservient Japanese creators/artists don't want to anger their new western masters by looking disrespectful.
The premise is weird and not the good kind like spirited away. We have the ugly old crowns (like the witch from spirited away), we have the small cute white spirits (like princess Mononoke), we have the "parrots" that look more like pigeons (in a similar fashion with previous works). We have the friendly spirit (here fire, in spirited away it was water).
We have a grotesque "heron" that we fail to explain what kind of thing it is. We have a forced, fake drama (not communicated at all) with the dead mother and the aunt/stepmother. We have a disappearance that is never explained properly. We have an alternate universe where birds are evil.
If this review is disjointed, it is because the movie is also. This movie reminded me of the trash/bizarre/weird situations on screen on Everything always at once without the emotional core of that movie/story. I never liked moving castle, but this is a low effort bottom self kind of offering.
Only for the fanz.

I watched, back to back, Chinatown and the Two Jakes.. Huge mistake, for the later film.
When I originally watched it, years ago, I thought it was fine.
It isn't.
Watching this again, after seeing the 1st one which by the way was better than I remembered, it was painfully obvious how plain, boring, uninteresting and confusing the sequel was.
It has a really good cast that gets wasted by a mediocre script and an amateur direction from Nicholson himself. Can't blame him because he had no experience..
Jack Nicholson appears, always, out of breath, strangling, even sickly. This gives the character an awkward feel.
Meg Tilly is the only interesting thing in the movie.
The story is overly complex and unsatisfactory.
Cinematography is beautiful and the sets also are excellent.
Shame.
