On the positive side of things, this movie has some good action, with Tom Cruise being in his usual strong suit of: faced paced, always on the run action star. Cobie Smulders turns in a solid secondary starring performance as Major Turner, who is basically the same character she plays in the MCU but that isnt a bad thing at all. At 2 hours long including all the credits it's a nice time waster that you can have on just for pure entertainment if you aren't expecting too much out of it.
On the negative side of things, despite being nearly 2 hours long this movie is constantly moving at a break neck sprint, that feels like we are flying through a much bigger book than should fit inside of a single Hollywood action movie. We're constantly experiencing "and then this happens" type moments that really make it difficult to take the story seriously and get fully immersed which isn't helped by the fact that the plot is VERY predictable and generic. Halfway through the movie I was able to figure out what the bad guys big plot was just because of how obvious it was the entire time. The villains don't get anymore generic and faceless than these do.
And then there's the daughter. Why do movies feel the need to keep inserting these teenage characters that serve as little more than obstacles for the adults to worry about while they try and solve the main plot? Like I THINK they were trying to use her as a way of making Jack question his entire way of life, but because she just gets introduced so quickly and with the movie moving at such a breakneck pace none of that attempted drama is actually ends up being compelling. Instead she just seems like an annoyance that the audience has to tolerate so that the B plot of the movie can keep moving along.
Final judgement: it's not a bad movie and it is entertaining; but it is not memorable at all and it doesn't compete with the countless other franchise movies that share this same premise of "retired badass military guy who solves problems." Nor does it live up to the quality of the first Jack Reacher movie. Like a fast food burger, it will satisfy your craving, but it won't leave you savoring the aftertaste.
