Celine Song should be commended. This "Romcom" dares to tackle romance from a financial POV. Unflinching without being cynical, Materialists addresses what must have been on the mind of many in relationships today but choose not to verbalize them. To some, money and romance should not even be mentioned in the same breath. But in this film, both co-exist and confront each other in a way that's at once disturbing yet illuminating. Song also managed to extract career-best performances from both Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans. Their chemistry is palpable, giving the film its emotional authenticity and a believable conclusion. Zoe Winter's performance gave Materialists gravitas. Her scenes with Johnson are packed with raw emotions that made them deserve repeated viewings. So, Celine, if you are reading this, big thanks to you and everyone in your team for making this memorable film with such a unique voice, giving us a refreshing take on this little big thing called "love". And to A24 and all investors involved, thank you for bringing this cinematic gem to the world.
Went into the cinema with great anticipation because Talk To Me was so fresh and exciting to me. It managed to capture something real, with incredible emotional depth to boot.
That's why I had to write this review with a heavy heart. I loved the two directors' first film so much - it stayed with me, it surprised me, it made me feel something sharp and real. But Bring Her Back... is a real letdown.
This is despite it starring Sally Hawkins - one of my favorite actresses. I've loved her in everything I've seen her in. And here, she gives it her all, from the first second she appears to the final, visually stunning moment. The young cast also delivers amazing performances. Kudos to their directors.
There's gore aplenty - meticulously designed and shot - but it seems to be there merely to shock us and make us squirm. The plot and its twists are sadly predictable, which is especially disappointing because Talk To Me showed how even a familiar setup can be twisted into something genuinely surprising and emotionally devastating.
The ritual video at the beginning is probably the most interesting element of the film.
There's something quite special about the relationship between the two siblings, and I kept hoping that would lead the story somewhere powerful in the end. But that didn't happen.
Grapefruit.
