Macrofun

Perhaps I should write this review with no name because I don't get it how it could be so popular and I don't want to receive all those emails bashing me and my taste. So have mercy on me but this film was a Turkey. Watching it on AMC has been maybe my most surreal (in a bad way) movie experience. I had taped the movie to watch it later and this was like a B movie gone wrong (slipped to C movie level). Not only did the film was completely annoying but in the commercial break AMC was showing a conversation among four individuals who were also watching the French Connection and were working on the issues of one of themselves, a guy who had been obsessed with a woman masseuse (who happened to be there also) who had refused to give him a massage... Wow, that is some interesting topic just fitting in with the film! Just as a note, the "obsessed" guy seemed to be the most real and interesting person of all of them. Well, the movie was about cops following (or car chasing) the bad guys endlessly who seemed to have no idea that they were followed until it was SO obvious that there was no way that they could not notice. The cops did not even bother to change the cars that were following the bad guys or to replace Gene Hackman whose hat was probably the only one worn in whole New York at the time not making it the perfect disguise. Full of plot holes besides this (how come the french sniper since he had a pistol did not just wait for Gene Hackman on the roof hiding somewhere to kill Hackman, or how come that Gene Hackman spotting the sniper from the roof of a ten-storey building could almost chase him down although the sniper was already in the streets running away...). And the music was rather cheesy reminding me of some bad horror movie so I kept waiting for a zombie to pop up form somewhere and light up the screen somehow. I don't know if it is the fact that this film was madde 32 years ago but for me it was an absolute disappointment.

Now I am sorry that I missed to see this film on a big movie screen. Beautiful cinematography, great story and excellent performances. During watching the movie, being Hungarian, I kept asking myself: A complete, intriguing story - but is it as appealing to people from other countries, particularly outside Europe as it is for me to watch my country's history throughout the 19th and 20th century? I was pleasantly surprised and flattered that people from Colombia or New Zealand have found interest in the history of this small nation although, considering the length of it as well as the fact that this tale is limited to follow a story of one small country, I can understand the reviewers who found it boring. But then again the fact that the story is being taken place in Hungary is only one side of the coin and the rest of the strong messages can be applied to any people in any nations.
