Hugo is about so many different things, while looking gorgeous at all times.
In the beginning I thought this movie would be an Oliver Twist kind of story. Then as it went it shifted into an underdog success story, but by the end it became a tale about cinema and forgotten heroes. This is called Absolute Cinema. On the other hand this is a story for children, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I would've 6-7 years ago. The dialogues are pretty good, there are some really funny moments too as well as tense ones.
The directing is obviously amazing with this fairy tale-like (Spielbergy) cinematography. The editing is gorgeous and the pacing is good. The production design is amazing, but looking back this movie could've used even more practicality, because some of the CGI shots didn't age well. The casting in hindsight is absolutely incredible. Ben Kingsley's performance was my absolute favourite and when I think of him now I always want to say Trevor Slattery :)
Hugo is probably a little overrated by the critics and The Academy, but on the other hand people underrate it very much. It's Absolute Cinema.
