Nordic mythology meets all the Jurassic Park films, the umpteen Godzilla adventures, King Kong with all of its remakes and giant ape brethren plus Roland Emmerich's disaster flicks in a good looking film that is chock full of homages to those films. You could easily say the script borrowed a bit too heavily from its inspirations, but would that be missing the point?
Subtlety is not a prerequisite for an entertaining giant monster movie though a dash of humor with a few winks to the audience can add some fun.
Troll is an entertaining giant monster movie and a lot of fun (if you go in for that sort of thing).

Was Robert Wise making his version of a John Ford cavalry picture ? Ford had released 2/3 of his magnificent trilogy by then.
The emotionally resounding mythic backgrounds, complex characters, heart and quality ring true as if it almost belongs in that trilogy (Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande).
Recommended.
