It's true that all of the characters in this movie are fairly typical action movie type characters. Judah, the occultish, sadistic leader of the future underworld, Ash and his Son, the perfect family, etc. And yes, the film is Archetypal, a story that has been told and will be told again. This being said I think the script has a basic appeal and the visual aspect of this movie is stunning. Both the violence and the landscape are very stylish. Whether Ash is dropping one of the murderers out a building, onto a car, or in pursuit on a motorcycle and looking overhead, the films maintains a visual richness not found most films, and hardly ever found in most action features I'd give this film a 7.
Cinema Veritae. This film is a brutally honest portrayal of adolescence, but one must keep in mind that it isn't anything more then that. Frankly, KIDS trips over itself to be shocking. For instance when Telly kicks his cat, or when Casper describes his menstruating women as having, "mad flavor." I've scene every form of anti-social behavior depicted in this film:Binge drinking, theft, violence, sexual battery,sh***y family life, but I've never witnessed all things repulsivve in one day. As far as the production and technical side goes, could they really have made the films cinemetography any duller? This film is really no more then a realistic but exaggerated script.
It amazes me how one penis can distract a mass of viewers. Indeed, the revelation is a 500 lb gorilla, but that doesn't take away from the touching romantic aspect or the superb camera work. Unlike most of the cinematic world, the real world is unpredictable, as is this movie. I really enjoyed this compassionate and well put together film. Let's hope Neil Jordan keeps breaking with convention and crossing genres.
