Joseph H. lewis was a great director who could do wonderful films with little money. Maybe that was why Columbia's president Harry Cohn gave him so much freedom to work. So Dark is the Night is an almost noir entry about a French detective on vacation in a little town near Paris who investigates some murders which he was somehow involved. A short and objective cheap movie that does not hide the director's talent and gives Steve Geray a great role. People who want to make unexpensive movies should know this gem.
Although it happens in 19th century London, the movie is not so frightening as Cuckor's Gaslight but it does have its credits as a good drama about an evil man played by Ray Milland who makes a missionary widow, Ann Todd with a weird hairdo, fall in love with him just to conduct her to proceed with his plan to rob a wealthy man who is married to Ann Todd's character friend. It has its moments and is suspenseful enough.
It's a slow paced European lesbian vampire erotic drama about a couple on honeymoon who happen to meet the gorgeous Countess Elisabeth Bathory, who actually existed in the 17th century. There is a lack of action that can be found on the Hammer entries of the genre but it is a very beautiful motion picture anyhow.
