I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I'm not a huge fan of the Indian god Hanuman, but happen to be a huge fan of the Chinese god/legend of Sun Wu'Kong, the Monkey King from the famous 100 chapter long The Journey to the West(Xi You Ji). Both are very similar, but the Chinese version being more powerful and marvelous. I loved the location shots and the scenes involving the monkeys. The film does has a very powerful message about honoring the history of ones culture and anothers while still being able to love. I really enjoyed the action sequences, the story moved at a brisk pace, and the score was amazing. The male lead and his Indian paramour were very believable as former flames who rekindle their childhood romance. I wish this film would receive a wider release, perhaps on DVD or at an arthouse. I watched this film on VCD and would recommend seeing it to anyone interested in the beauty of India, the marvelous monkeys, the great cinematography and the elusive Monkey God, Hanuman.
I've always loved this film despite some of its shortcomings. The music has haunted me for years and I can't get that "Jenny" song outta my head. Rankin & Bass have released almost all of their "holiday" films on DVD, yet this one and a few others remain unreleased. Granted, I wasn't much of a fan of 'The Last Dinosaur', I still loved 'Mad Monster Party' and 'The Bermuda Depths.' A truncated version was shown on the locally owned WBNX TV-55(which is owned by wig-wearing, bible-pushing Ernest Angely) back in 1994 with all the naughty words like "hell" or "damn" edited out. It was also missing the first 2-3 minutes of the film. I wish Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass will finally put the UNCUT version of this baby out on DVD so that we can enjoy this haunting classic in the privacy of our own homes, recall when Connie Selleca was a quite a hottie before she married BUCK ROGERS' Gil Gerard and then eventually John Tesh, marvel at afroed Carl Weathers' doomed Marine biologist and enjoy the haunting Maury Laws score. Widescreen format please!!!!
