I don't look to this movie (or the Tommyknockers, which gets the same mixed reviews) for the special effects or the best acting in the world. I look to them because they offer insight into our imaginations, something that we tend to lose the older we get. These movies are made to get your imagination pumping, and make you think about other situations rather than our own current situations.
Immerse yourself in the film's story, not in the acting, or the music, or the plot holes that may or may not exist. In the case of this movie, it almost has to be watched in whole to get the effect.
Just my own opinion.

I saw this movie when I was 13 or 14, and didn't understand it at all. I was enamored by the visual effects. This time around, I'm 22, and have an electronics background, so I understand some of the concepts a little more. It really isn't a bad movie, it speculates what the world will become in 2001, which is obviously a little innaccurate, considering it's almost 2002, but still. The concept is completely science fiction, and, for all we know, could be a sign of things to come. Maybe not now, but in the future. It won't be as obvious as a mainframe with open I/O ports letting a purely electronic being out into the world's data networks, but it could be a precursor to some AI developments. In 50 years, people may think this movie was worthless, or they could think that it was a vision into the future.
Either way, the movie makes you think, and that is more than can be said for a lot of movies (i.e. Dude Where's My Car). Good movie. Rent it or watch it on the Sci-Fi channel.

I've never read any Jack the Ripper books.
I've never seen any Jack the Ripper movies.
I didn't even know the story behind Jack the Ripper until the other day. Then I saw From Hell. The title of the movie is ironic because it seems the movie itself came "From Hell." I will never get that 2 hours (and $8) of my life back. The movie was slow moving, incredibly predictable, and had a slow, drawn out climax.
The scenery was amazing, and the special effects were fantastic. That much I'll give. Even the acting was good. It is just that the story stunk.
Don't go see it. Rent it. Maybe even wait for HBO. You already know what happens anyway.
