I got to view this movie tonight and I can honestly say that I was not expecting much from it, especially after I saw Kevin Smith on Leno last night talking about how after his wife read the script that she thought it was aiming for the 12-year-old boy crowd. I figured that since I had seen the other four in the "trilogy", I may as well see this one in theaters also. I'm very glad that I did. I can honestly say that I was never really won over by any of the previous movies in this series, but this one had me from the opening credits (or actually credit...the movie just kinda jumped right in without giving much information about cast, crew, etc). While the movie had me hooked, I was surprised by how many people kept popping up in this movie. Ben Affleck, James Van Der Beek, Ali Larter, Mark Hamill (okay, if you are even a part time fan of the Star Wars saga, the ticket price is worth just his part to see all the Star Wars references), Seann William Scott, Jason Biggs, Judd Nelson...the list goes on and on. I guess I'm talking more to the people who are not big fans of Kevin Smith's prior works (I know that anyone who is a huge follower of his work will be among the first people in line), when I say check it out.

I saw this movie tonight and I actually was crying at one point because this movie is everything a movie should be. Everything worked so well together. The actors were great, the make up was outstanding (I hope the Academy doesn't overlook this movie when Oscar time rolls around) and the background/setting was spectacular. I HIGHLY recommend this movie, but when you go to see it, just remember, it's a readaptation of the original Planet of the Apes, NOT a remake, so don't go in thinking that the only thing that has changed is the cast.

Any movie where half of the cast dies, is promising to a horror fanatic, such as myself. Before I saw this movie, I was commenting to my father (also an avid horror movie lover) that there needed to be a new horror movie character. Between Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, twenty-four movies have been made to date, and while they are enjoyable and I will more than likely see any movies released about them in the future, it is time for another horror movie villain to break into the scene. The Outpost (a.k.a. Mind Ripper, the title I found it under) has created that villain in Thor. This movie was predictable, but I was very excited to see that film makers were at least making an effort to get another horror movie series started. Unfortunately, this movie did not go over well with the general public, so there will probably not be a sequel. I guess that's probably a good thing since it wouldn't be the same without Gregory Sporleder (there...you know who one of the people to die is, but you have to watch it to find out who the other four are...hee, hee).
