Cleddau

Just finished the English language version. Starts well, good cast, typical but credible murder mystery. Sadly many of these shows seem to be written without planning a proper ending so get lost in the woods. After a dozen red herrings it becomes obvious who dunnit. Why? There's only one person left! The ending is utterly ludicrous. Save your time by watching something better. The cast is excellent and do their very best to rescue this turkey from the mess it sinks to. You can actually see mike's in advance what's going to happen next. I feel sorry for the actors who have to wade through this bilge.

As a big fan of good TV crime, I found a lot to enjoy here. The series is both exciting, has good characters played by convincing actors and filmed in beautiful surroundings in Wales. The series has 6 episodes. For my part, I think the quality of the episodes was variable. It starts very exciting, nail-biting, creepy and a promising start. Halfway through the series, I fall off a bit. The story becomes more elaborate with a focus on not only the current case, but also murders far back in time. Then I think there is a lot of dialogue, investigation, back and forth. This at the expense of the excitement that I am looking for in such series. But by all accounts, this one is far above the majority of crime TV. It just doesn't manage to keep me on my toes the whole way.

This six part Welsh drama is set in the town of Pembroke Dock. When a nurse is found murdered in Cleddau Woods police are reminded of a similar case that occurred some time ago. Since a man is already in gaol for the previous killing it looks as if there is a copycat at work... or they got the wrong man before. DS Rick Sheldon is leading the case but when links to the old case are found DI Ffion Lloyd, who also worked that case, is called in from Cardiff. This leads to some tension as they had been involved with each other before he left her for the woman who is now his wife.

I thought this was a solid addition to the 'Cambri-Noir' genre; I'm certainly glad my newspaper recommended it as I doubt I would have seen it otherwise. The case is interesting as are the main characters. There are a good selection of suspects which should keep the viewer guessing. The relationship issues are perhaps unnecessary but don't detract from the story too much. Pembrokeshire may be an attractive part of these islands but the way this is shot manages to create an ominous feel. The cast does a fine job bringing the characters to life; most obviously Elen Rhys and Richard Harrington who play DI Lloyd and DS Sheldon respectively. As the story approaches its conclusion there are some nice twists and turns. By the end the case may be wrapped up but it feels like we might not have seen the last of these characters. Overall I'd certainly recommend this to viewers who enjoyed shows like 'Hinterland' from a few years ago which also starred Richard Harrington.

These comments are based on watching the series in Welsh with English subtitles as shown on S4C. I believe an English version titled 'The One That Got Away' will air later, presumably on BBC4 if it follows the pattern set by 'Hinterland'.

I have watched some BBC Wales dramas in the past and enjoyed them. Keeping Faith was one of them.

This one hooked me from the very beginning , watched first 3 episodes without a break.

Unlike a lot of dramas the characters are not cardboard cutouts , they all have a bit of depth and actually are quite realistic.

The story is quite good, plenty of twists and turns. At the end of the day it's very good solid entertainment. Occasionally there are some silly coincidences and some predictable occurrences. Still overall I enjoyed it, mainly due to the actors and the sense of realism.

This is good solid BBC drama which vis most enjoyable. Recommend watching it.

I think that title quote paraphrases the late Tommy Docherty, and sums up this whole aimless and pointless effort. Richard Harrington very rapidly used up his full stock of ten facial expressions, at least two of which are 'confused', and it was downhill all the way from there.

I really can't believe I watched this right through to the end, and I think it was only for the Welsh. My work took me to that nation for some years, long long ago, and I made an effort to acquire a basic smattering of the language, so I was interested to hear it spoken again. But of course the dialogue was way too fast for me, and I was totally reliant upon the subtitles.

And what did I see? A convoluted story with more plot holes than a Swiss cheese, and incompetence upon incompetence from the two central police officers. As for the ending, the very final shot, well no, NO, NOOOOO!

I should give it one, but for the small enjoyment I had trying to follow the Welsh, so a very generous three out of ten.

Now go away, Harrington boyo, and don't come back, OK?
