Starring two elderly parents (Antonio Resines) and Bego (Gracia Olayo), whose children Carla (Clara Lago) and Miguel (Alberto Olmo) completely ignore them and never have time to visit. Fed up with their children's aloofness and selfishness, the couple devises a crazy plan to win them back: pretending they've won the lottery and are now multimillionaires. All of it resulting in funny tangles.
Lately, it's becoming common for Spanish film successes to come from remakes of movies that have triumphed in other countries. This isn't unusual, given that similar things happen in markets like Mexico, Italy, France, and Argentina. The last year, three remakes of French comedies have hit the Spanish box office. First, "¿ Quién es Quién ? (Who's Who?)" and "Al otro lado (The Other Side)," and now it's "Un lio de millones." Cartoonish characters, amusing mess, exaggerated situations, and a typical (or not so typical) Spanish family are the ingredients of this remake of the French hit ¨Price of Parenting¨ (2021) or ¨Mes très chers enfants" by Alexandre Leclére with Josiane Balasko, Didier Bourdon, Marilou Berry. In the Spanish version Béjar creates a comedy that delves deeper into this detachment, as well as the empty-nest feeling suffered by the protagonist's mother. Similarly, he creates a loving couple of a certain age, but the focus of their lives is far from ideal grandparents, given that such a figure doesn't exist. This, of course, gives it a more adult tone that doesn't prevent it from being enjoyable as a family, but it does take the focus off the children, who tend to be scene-stealers in these kinds of projects. This film is an acceptable comedy with certain human values, which praises the family as the fundamental axis of society. The four protagonists give wonderful performances, with special mention to the veteran married couple, Antonio Resines and Gracia Olayo. Director Susan Bejar herself says: "This is a comedy with values, close to our customs, and very funny, in which we all see ourselves reflected as parents or as children, but also as the children we have been, and as the parents we will one day be."
The motion picture was well directed by Susan Bejar in his debut, she had previously made Shorts. Her first short film "Joselyn", was subsidized by the program Madrid en Corto and distributed all over the world being selected in over 20 countries. With the proceeds of the awards Susan wrote, produced and directed "Chicas Day", which won Lunafest in San Francisco and the Moet Star Award in Japan, among other awards. "Chicas Day" has also been acquired by educational and content platforms in the US and Asia. Susan also wrote and directed 4 other short films with her friend and colleague Gabriel Beitia. Her film "21 with 40", for example, boasts more than 5.9 million views on Youtube. ¨Un lio de millones¨rating¨ rating: 6.5/10.
