The beloved annual Provincetown International Film Festival (Piff) is having a big moment with its buzzy 2025 lineup. IndieWire can announce that leading horror auteur Ari Aster will be honored with the Filmmaker on the Edge title at the festival, which will take place from June 11 to 15 in Provincetown, Ma.

Aster will be in Provincetown to receive the award and participate in conversation with resident artist John Waters on Saturday, June 14, ahead of the nationwide release of his new film “Eddington” on July 18. MK2 Films, which has six movies in competition at Cannes, will also be launching sales at the market on “The Revolution According to Kamo,” the next film by “Pieces of a Woman” director Kornél Mundruczó.

The film is penned by Paweł Pawlikovski, the Oscar-winning director of “Ida” and “Cold War, Ben Hopkins, and Kata Weber (“Pieces of a Woman”), from an idea by Pawlikovski. In the run up to Cannes, the project has also been boarded by French distribution company Le Pacte, as well as Arte.

“The Revolution According to Kamo” is set against the collapse of the Russian Empire, and revolves around the friendship between Simon Arshaki Ter-Petrosyan, the future Bolshevik revolutionary known as Kamo, and his childhood friend Soso, who became the dictator Stalin.

Cannes laureate Kornél Mundruczó is juggling high-profile projects across different continents.

There’s the Ellen Burstyn-starrer “Place to Be,” currently filming in Australia and “At the Sea” featuring Amy Adams and now in post-production.

The Hungarian filmmaker, who won the Fipresci prize at Cannes for “Delta,” and the festival’s Un Certain Regard prize for “White God” and gained further recognition with Venice winner and Oscar-nominated Netflix feature “Pieces of a Woman,” is clearly continuing to diversify his portfolio.

“Place to Be,” Mundruczó reveals, was inspired by his desire to work with Ellen Burstyn again after their brief but impactful collaboration on “Pieces of a Woman.”

“The White Lotus” star Murray Bartlett has returned to his native Australia to film “Place to Be,” the latest project from Cannes and Venice winner Kornél Mundruczó, which is currently shooting.

In “Place to Be,” Bartlett plays Ron, Pamela Anderson’s hapless brother, with the siblings plotting to re-home their mother Brooke (Ellen Burstyn) and access their late artist father’s inheritance.

“We’re attempting to shuffle our mother into a high-end aged care facility,” Bartlett tells Variety. “He kind of presents as prickly… But there’s a lot going on. There’s a lot happened in this family dynamic, particularly with his father, who has passed away.”

The drama, written by award-winning screenwriter Kata Wéber (known for “Pieces of a Woman” and “White God”), follows the unlikely friendship between no-nonsense Brooke and discombobulated divorcee Nelson, played by Taika Waititi, as they travel from Chicago to New York to return a lost racing pigeon.

As the industry encounters a wave of diversity, equity and inclusion rollbacks, Amy Adams, filmmaker Karyn Kusama and Telluride Film Festival executive director Julie Huntsinger are booked to discuss representation in front of the next generation.

The trio will participate in a student-led Q&a panel as part of the Archer Film Festival at the Writers Guild Theater in Los Angeles on April 11. The chat, for Archer School for Girls students and aspiring filmmakers, is designed to focus on “pressing questions of how to create meaningful change for women in film, both in front of and behind the camera, within a rapidly shifting industry,” per the school.

The Archer Film Fest is an entirely student-led and organized effort that seeks to empower female filmmakers and amplify underrepresented voices. In addition to the Q&a, the fest will screen a selection of finalist films. More than 300 student-produced film submissions were received from more than 30 countries.

Exclusive: Emmy-winning actor, writer, director and producer Dan Levy has signed with CAA.

Levy had been without agency representation since leaving WME in November — at least in part over circumstances related to his upcoming Netflix series — with CAA quickly emerging as his likely destination. That has now been made official.

Levy co-created, executive produces and stars in the new comedy series, which is awaiting green light from Netflix. It is part of the overall film and TV deal Levy and his Not a Real Production Company have at the global streamer that included his film directorial debut Good Grief, which he also wrote, produced and starred in alongside Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel.

Cape Fear is based on John D. MacDonald’s novel The Executioners — which inspired the 1962 feature of the same name directed by J. Lee Thompson from storyboards devised by original director Alfred Hitchcock — and the 1991 remake directed by Scorsese.

The 10-episode series greenlit in November, is described as a tense, Hitchcockian thriller and an examination of America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century. “I’m super excited because it’s all new and I’ve always fantasized about being here,” the veteran star told The Hollywood Reporter while standing on the red carpet last month inside Park City’s Eccles Center Theatre where he joined co-stars John Malkovich, Ayo Edebiri, Juliette Lewis, Stephanie Suganami and Tatanka Means at the world premiere of festival entry Opus from filmmaker Mark Anthony Green and A24.

Opus follows Ariel, a young writer (Edebiri), who receives a surprise invitation to join a group of journalists and media personalities in making the trek to the compound of a global pop superstar, Alfred Moretti (Malkovich), who has resurfaced after a 30 year disappearance. When the group arrives, they soon realize that Moretti is a figure of obsession for those around him and there are nefarious plans in place.

The trio of actors join previously announced stars Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer for a film that charts the outlaw’s “last days” that’s written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, the filmmaker behind the critically-acclaimed “Pig” and “A Quiet Place: Day One.”

The film finds Jackman’s Robin Hood “grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder,” the official logline explains, “a battleworn loner finds himself gravely injured and in the hands of a mysterious woman, who offers him a chance at salvation.” Principal photography begins this week in Ireland.

Lyrical Media is fully financing the film. Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett will produce under their Ryder Picture Company banner, alongside Alexander Black for Lyrical Media and Jackman. Lyrical’s Jon Rosenberg and Natalie Sellers will executive produce with Rama Gottumukkala and Sarnoski.

Apple Original Films has scooped up “All Of You,” a slightly sci-fi, bittersweet romance from star and co-writer Brett Goldstein.

The “Ted Lasso” alum shared scriptwriting duties with the film’s director William Bridges (“Black Mirror”) and co-stars with Imogen Poots. The project premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and went on to screen at the London Film Festival.

Produced by MRC, Republic Pictures and Ryder Picture Company, “All of You” exists in a world where a new test matching soulmates together comes between two best friends. They spend over a decade trying to resist the urge to disrupt the paths their lives have taken — marriage, children, and tragedy — despite the undeniable feeling that they belong together. Steven Cree and Zawe Ashton also star in the film, set for a 2025 streaming debut.

Emmy winners Goldstein and Bridges also served as producers with Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett.

Pic is based on the incredible true story of the notorious mafia hitman who was hired by Hoover’s FBI off-the-books and partnered with a young Black special agent to hunt down those responsible for the murders of civil rights leaders in 1966 Mississippi.

Exclusive: The European Producers Club (Epc) has voiced its support for Ukrainian producer Alexander Rodnyansky, after a Russian court sentenced him in absentia last week to eight-and-a-half years in prison.

The sentence was related to charges of spreading fake news about Russia’s war in Ukraine, after the producer posted on social media against Russian missile attacks on a maternity hospital in Mariupol and andother civilian targets in Kyiv, Dnieper and Zaporozhye in the early days of the 2022 invasion.

Paris-based body Epc – which gathers 160 top independent producers in Europe including Rodnyansky – said its members were “deeply troubled” by the sentence.

Exclusive: Fresh off his breakout role in the latest season of American Horror Stories, Henry Eikenberry has found a new agency as he has signed with Gersh for representation.

He stars in one of the standalone episodes of Hulu’s new season of American Horror Stories and also recently wrapped production on Kornél Mundruczó’s next film At The Sea starring Amy Adams.

His other past credits include his role on Sam Levinson’s Euphoria for HBO. He played Derek, the focal character in a revelatory love story following Jacob Elordi’s father Cal in his adolescent years. Immediately after, he booked two back-to-back roles appearing in the series The Crowded Room at Apple TV+ opposite Tom Holland, and co-starred in the Focus Feature horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein, written by Diablo Cody opposite Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse.

He continues to be repped by Linden Entertainment Group.

Oscar-nominated producer Alexander Rodnyansky has been sentenced in absentia to eight-and-a-half years in jail by a Russian court on charges of spreading fake news about Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The trial was related to social media posts by Rodnyansky, firstly in March 2022, in which he criticized a Russian missile attack on a maternity hospital in Mariupol, and in October 10, 2022, about attacks by the Russian army on civilian targets in Kyiv, Dnieper and Zaporozhye.

Rodnyansky, who was born in Kyiv but spent much of his career working in Russia, fled the country shortly after its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Commenting on the legal action in a talk at NATPE Budapest over the summer, Rodnyansky said he was expecting an eight- to 10-year jail sentence, but that it was “too late to be scared.”

Exclusive: After delivering Netflix two hit movies in The Mother and Atlas, Jennifer Lopez is readying her next feature with the streamer, this time pairing with two-time Ted Lasso Emmy winner Brett Goldstein for the irreverent romantic comedy Office Romance. There was a hot bidding war for the feature, which Netflix won.

Goldstein and Joe Kelly are co-writing the rom-com, which we hear from sources has several great character actor roles.

Producers on Office Romance are Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett for Ryder Picture Company; Goldstein and Kelly; as well as Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina for Nuyorican Films. Nuyorican’s Courtney Baxter is executive producer.

Nuyorican Productions has a multiyear first-look deal with Netflix spanning feature films, TV series and unscripted content, with an emphasis on projects that support diverse female actors, writers and filmmakers.

Both Lopez and Goldstein recently had pics at the Toronto Film Festival.

What’s next for Amy Adams after the world premiere of “Nightbitch” at TIFF this weekend? Downforce follows Victoria (Hewson), the estranged daughter of a storied racing team’s owner, Sir Trevor (Bartlett), who is thrust back into the family business, leaving the pair to find common ground or risk destroying the team’s legacy.

Sir Trevor is described as the team’s “larger-than-life founder and owner.” Victoria is “a shrewd and ruthless investment banker who finds her way back into the front office. She knows business, he knows racing, and together they have to figure out the business of racing after years apart.”

Searchlight Pictures has released the trailer for “Nightbitch,” a horror comedy starred Amy Adams that’s based on the 2021 novel by Rachel Yoder.

Per the official logline “Nightbitch” follows an “artist who pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mom [and] seeks a new chapter in her life [who] encounters just that, when her nightly routine takes a surreal turn and her maternal instincts begin to manifest in canine form.”

With less than a month to go before the 76th Emmy Awards, the telecast’s hosts are finally set. As expected, the father-son duo of Eugene Levy and Dan Levy will emcee this year’s Emmys, which take place on Sunday, Sept. 15, live on ABC.

The two made history in 2020 as the first father and son to win major awards in the same year, thanks to “Schitt’s Creek.” That year — in which winners appeared remotely, due to the Covid-19 pandemic — saw Eugene Levy win for outstanding comedy actor and Dan Levy win for supporting comedy actor. Dan Levy also picked up wins for writing and directing, while both won the outstanding comedy series Emmy as exec producers.

“For two Canadians who won our Emmys in a literal quarantine tent, the idea of being asked to host this year in an actual theater was incentive enough,” the Levys said in a joint statement.

Exclusive: Pieces of a Woman‘s Kornel Mundruczó has five new additions to his new drama At the Sea, co-written with longtime collaborator Kata Wéber. They are Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso), Chloe East (The Fabelmans), Daniel Levy (Good Grief), Jenny Slate (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On), and Rainn Wilson (The Office).

As previously announced, Amy Adams and Murray Bartlett will also star. Production is now underway outside of Boston.

At the Sea follows the life of Laura (Adams) as she returns to her family at their holiday beach home following a long rehabilitation. There, she must readjust to the complicated life she left behind and face the next chapter without the career that gave her fame, fortune and, most importantly, identity.

“The Tomorrow War” and “The Lego Batman Movie” filmmaker Chris McKay has been tapped to direct an adaptation of Brynne Weaver’s bestselling serial killer romance, “Butcher & Blackbird,” for Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company (Rpc).

The novel is the first installment of Weaver’s popular “Ruinous Love” trilogy, which was released in October. It became a New York Times, USA Today and Publisher’s Weekly bestseller and was a favorite on BookTok, TikTok’s hub for book lovers. Weaver recently signed a seven-figure deal for her upcoming dark rom-com trilogy. She has sold over 1 million copies of her books in over 18 countries.

Lyrical Media’s Alexander Black and Rpc’s Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett will produce the film, with Rpc’s Emma Rappold serving as co-producer. Lyrical Media’s Jon Rosenberg and Natalie Sellers will executive produce alongside Weaver. The film does not have a screenwriter attached.

Alexander Rodnyansky expects Russian authorities to sentence him to up to ten years in prison in his absence over his anti-war stance, but the Ar Content founder says it’s “too late to be scared” as he focuses on bolstering his slate of film and TV series.

Rodnyansky was born in Kyiv but a Moscow resident when, as a vocal critic of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, he was forced to flee in 2022.

Speaking at NATPE Budapest, the producer and former TV exec talked about his anti-war position and his large social media following. “That’s why I am arrested in absentia,” he said. “I’m on trial right now and I am about to get a sentence of from eight-to-ten years of imprisonment. Many of my friends already received these sentences; writers, journalists, some filmmakers.”

Rodnyansky said charges against him and others are designed to shut down anti-war voices inside Russia.

Kornel Mundruczo is to direct The Revolution According To Kamo, a historical drama exploring the youth of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin through the eyes of his closest friend, with filming set to begin in Georgia in 2025.

Kata Weber, a frequent collaborator of Mundruczo, has adapted an original screenplay by Pawel Pawlikowski and Ben Hopkins. The script was developed with support from Film4.

Kornel Mundruczo (Pieces Of A Woman) has signed on to direct The Revolution According To Kamo, a biopic about the friendship between Simon Arshaki Ter-Petrosyan aka “Kamo” and his best childhood friend “Soso” who would go on to become Joseph Stalin.

Mundrcuczo’s frequent collaborator Kata Weber has adapted an original screenplay by Pawel Pawlikowski and Ben Hopkins.

Spanning 30 years between 1891 and Kamo’s death in 1922, the Georgian-language film is described as “a portrait of the birth of the world’s most murderous dictator through the eyes of his best friend, ally, devoted disciple, and henchman.” The two grew up together in the small town of Gori close to Tbilisi. Stalin was born into extreme poverty while Kamo’s family were wealthy merchants. Exclusive: Israeli director Dani Rosenberg has set his next film with Alexander Rodnyansky’s Ar content. The film, which Rosenberg wrote with Ori Avinoam and Itai Tamir, is called Of Dogs and Men and Ar Content will produce with Tamier (Under a Blue Sun) of Laila Films.

The story follows 16-year-old Dar, who returns to her kibbutz to look for her dog who was lost during the terror attack of October 7. She navigates through the horrors etched upon the place and on the faces of people she meets while encountering the stark reality of the unfolding disaster beyond the fence. Between those who seek revenge and those whose faith in mankind remains unwavering, Dar will try to find her own voice.

Financed by Ar Content, Of Dogs and Men was shot in October and November 2023 in the kibbutzim lining the border with Gaza.

Exclusive: Pascal Caucheteux’s Why Not Productions is joining Alexander Rodnyansky’s Ar Content to produce Beanpole helmer Kantemir Balagov’s first English-language film Butterfly Jam. Goodfellas is set to launch sales on the project in Cannes next week.

The project, which is financed by Ar Content, is set to go into production later this year with casting still underway. Based on Balagov’s script and set in a tight-knit U.S. community of Circassian immigrants, Butterfly Jam portrays a complicated relationship between a father and son, in which the son imbues his father with qualities he doesn’t actually possess.
