Everything Coming to Hulu and Disney+ in June
Image
While the Max rebrand back to HBO Max has the streaming world in a tizzy, it’s worth remembering the significance of keeping diverse subscriptions. While “Hacks” and “The Last of Us” wrap up over on that side of your library, the Hulu and Disney bundle is essential for maximizing this summer’s offerings.

Disney+ continues to be the go-to streamer for family friendly viewing options; this month, they’ll add the official “Frozen” Broadway musical to that library, along with Marvel’s “Ironheart,” about Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) who was introduced in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

Hulu has everything you need for an “Alien” movie marathon, all to gear up for FX’s “Alien: Earth” which premieres in August. You could also do a “Mamma Mia!” marathon or “Bachelor” binge — we’re not here to judge.

Top Pick: “The Bear” Season 4 (Available on Hulu)

Every Movie Leaving Netflix in April 2025
Image
Every month, Netflix welcomes a whole new batch of films to its catalog, which is always exciting to see. However, that also means plenty of films inevitably say goodbye to the beloved streaming service. Unfortunately, there are quite a few top-notch films slated for the chopping block that subscribers will want to check out before they leave the platform next month.

Despite the slew of films planning to make an exit from Netflix in April, there’s still plenty of time to watch them while they’re still around. That being said, don’t wait too long because who knows if they’ll ever make a return. Given the list of films scheduled to depart the streaming service, subscribers will undoubtedly want to check them out before it’s too late.

10 Movies to Watch Before They Leave Netflix in April
Image
Once again, Netflix is refreshing its catalog, preparing for new releases to enter the platform. While the arrival of new titles is exciting, it can be disappointing for viewers who may not have had the opportunity to catch a favorite film or one that they haven't had the chance to see. Consider this a friendly reminder to queue up that watchlist with these films before they disappear.

With all sorts of genres ranging from children and family to horror and comedy, these films demand a viewing before they're removed from Netflix. Fortunately, not every release is leaving right as the month of April dawns, but that doesn't mean checking out the film should be delayed. For movie lovers who haven't watched a lot in March and are looking to stack their Letterboxd diaries, these are the films to watch out for.

Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh Makes $1 Million Per Year from Ridiculousness Theme Song
Image
Outside of Devo, co-founder and vocalist Mark Mothersbaugh has carved out a lucrative niche for himself by scoring films and creating music for TV shows. However, it’s his work on the theme for one of the most-aired shows of all time, MTV’s Ridiculousness, that’s been the biggest earner, bringing in about $1 million per year.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Mothersbaugh spoke about the success of the reworked version of Devo’s “Uncontrollable Urge” in comparison to his other themes and his group’s best-known song, “Whip It.”

“I’ve written so many other songs for films and television shows,” Mothersbaugh said. “I would’ve been shocked [years ago] if you told me this is the one that would become this prime source of income.”

He continued, “MTV stopped playing us but we came to the other side of the circle. It’s a nice ironic twist because...

Fresh Face: Izaac Wang Developed His ‘Dìdi’ Character As A “More Vulnerable, Immature” Version Of His True Self
Image
All smiles, perched in his gaming chair during our interview, Izaac Wang rattles off the fun things he does in his spare time, such as crafting theater performances at his fine arts high school, sharing memes on his secret Instagram account and playing popular online video games like Valorant. He wants to avoid the notion that he’s the same as Chris, his on-screen counterpart in the film Dìdi, written and directed by Sean Wang (no relation).

“I’m very cool.” the actor says. “For the characters I play, I think of it as me, but in a multiverse—like Spider-Man. Chris is just me, if I was less awesome than I am right now. He’s a more vulnerable, immature, younger version of me, going through a difficult stage in his life where he’s surrounded by a community of people that aren’t as accepting as the people...

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Upends ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ After One Week on PVOD
Image
The fiasco of “Joker: Folie à Deux” is something that Warner Bros. can’t hide from — other distributors question its officially reported $7 million gross for its second weekend, now #4 after initially ridiculously claiming #3. But the success of its “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the actual #3, remains a nice counterbalance.

Tim Burton’s sequel, at $275 million in U.S./Canada gross, came out as a PVOD rental only 32 days after release (unusual these days for a WB hit — “Dune Part 2” and “Godzilla Vs. Kong” had 47 day windows). But even without specific figures, it’s clear that it got a lot of action.

It replaced Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the year’s second biggest grosser (more than double “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”) after the Marvel film’s first week out. And it likely wasn’t close — it is #1 at Fandango, which calculates by revenue. With “Deadpool” costing 25 percent more to rent ($24.99 to $19.99), that means it had a clear victory.

Superbad Fans Need to Watch This 2024 Movie on Prime
Image
Superbad is one of the best coming-of-age movies. The main characters fall victim to their circumstances as they try to head to an epic party. It's a non-stop laugh-out-loud journey for the audience, with plenty of nostalgia and relatable character arcs. Superbad follows Evan and Seth, played by Michael Cera and Jonah Hill, as best friends on the cusp of big life changes. When this film emerged, it elevated coming-of-age stories, packing them with one-liners and awkward teen moments. While Superbad focused on humor, the more recent Ddi had a different plan. Ddi builds a one-of-a-kind story arc around one pre-teen's awkward journey of self-discovery.

In a handful of ways, Ddi is similar to Superbad but diverges slightly from the comedy and pulls the focus more toward the life of one angsty thirteen-year-old boy. Chris Wang, played by Izaac Wang, struggles to find his place in the world, where exactly...

Jack Whitehall is set bring his festive cheer to Amazon Prime Video for the first time, with the streamer having announced a Christmas special fronted by the British comedian and actor.

Netflix’s New Releases Coming in October 2024
Image
The return of a reality TV monster that’s sure to dominate social media conversation; Charlie and Nick’s blossoming romance; a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the NBA courtesy of LeBron James and Anthony Edwards; the latest gem from an action auteur; Tyler Perry’s first Netflix television drama and another helping espionage and drama from Keri Russell are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in October.

Coming in hot on Oct. 2 is the new season of Netflix’s reality dating show Love Is Blind. The seventh go around for the main franchise — the brand has now expanded into several country-specific versions — will see a fresh batch of singles heading into the pods, hoping to find love and marry their match, all within a worryingly compressed timeline. The show, which is still billed as a “social experiment,” has experienced some bad PR in recent seasons,...

Everything Coming to Netflix in October 2024
Image
Fall is here, which means it’s time to bundle up on your couch and stream the weekend away. Let’s get into it: There’s plenty to enjoy in October on Netflix, from a new Ali Wong special to new seasons of shows like “Love Is Blind” and “Unsolved Mysteries.” The real unsolved mystery is how it feels like there is more “Love Is Blind” dropping every month, but I digress.

October also brings with it the chance to watch Season 1 of “Yellowjackets” (a Showtime hit) for the first time on the Netflix platform, as well as more “Outer Banks” and “The Lincoln Lawyer.” The best bet, however, is the return of Keri Russell.

Top Pick: “The Diplomat” Season 2

Russell returns as U.S. ambassador to the U.K. Kate Wyler in this “The Americans” meets “Homeland” Emmy-nominated hit. Season 1 ended with a massive cliffhanger, so the six-episode Season...

The film — which has now wrapped production — comes from Emblem Pictures, and was written by two-time Oscar nominee Michael Radford (best known for directing 1994 global sensation “Il Postino”) and directed by Emmy winner Annabel Jankel (“Tell It to the Bees”).

Produced by Warren Derosa and Zsófia Kende, “Desperate Journey” is based on the true story of Freddie Knoller (played by Tønnesen), a young man forced to flee Vienna as Nazi hysteria takes hold. Knoller’s captivating story has been widely recognized around the world and he was honored by the late Queen Elizabeth.

Scholastic Paying $183 Million to Acquire Full Economic Interest in Animation Studio 9 Story Media
Image
Scholastic is boosting its entertainment biz: The kids media and publishing company announced a $186 million deal to acquire full economic interest in 9 Story Media Group, a leading children’s content producer and distributor.

Through the investment, Scholastic will acquire 100% of the economic interest in and a minority of voting rights in 9 Story Media, the animation studio behind TV shows including “Doc McStuffins” (pictured above), “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood,” “Octonauts,” “Wild Kratts” and “The Magic School Bus Rides Again.”

The companies said the deal “solidifies” the more than two decades of collaboration between Scholastic Entertainment and 9 Story. The investment has been approved by both companies’ boards of directors and the shareholders of 9 Story. The deal is expected to close in Scholastic’s fiscal 2025 first quarter, which begins on June 1, 2024, subject to customary closing conditions.

Disney+ “Goosebumps” Series Renewed for Season 2 With New Cast and New Setting!
R.L. Stine
Last year’s R.L. Stine-based Disney+ series “Goosebumps” will return for Season 2, we’ve learned this weekend, but the cast and setting will be switched up this time around.

Variety reports, “The announcement was made during the Disney Branded Television presentation at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. As part of the announcement, it was also revealed that the second season would be eight episodes compared to the 10-episode first season, and that the show is going the anthology route. Thus, Season 2 will feature an entirely new cast and setting based on R.L. Stine’s iconic Scholastic book series.”

“Audiences everywhere fell in love with the series’ chills, thrills, heart and humor, making it one of Disney Branded Television’s most-watched shows of last year,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. “We can’t wait to dive deeper into the brilliant mind of R.L.

Oscars 2025: Awards contenders from the 2024 Sundance Film Festival
Image
Back at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, Celine Song’s debut feature, “Past Lives,” premiered to rave reviews and early speculation about its awards chances. That turned out to be prescient. One year later, “Past Lives” is a 2024 Oscars Best Picture nominee, while Song is a nominee for Best Original Screenplay. So with the 2024 Sundance Film Festival at its end, what better time than now to speculate about what next year’s “Past Lives” will be? Whether anything on 2024’s Sundance roster can scale those heights is up for debate, but plenty of promising titles could compete for acting and screenplay prizes. The documentary lineup was robust this year, which makes sense: Six of the last 10 Best Documentary Feature Film winners got their start at Sundance.

Below is a sample of Sundance highlights that could be award contenders this time next year.

Watch the Trailer for New Goosebumps Series
Image
[Editor's Note: This article was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being discussed here wouldn't exist.]

Based on R.L. Stine's beloved book series of the same name (which I encountered many summer afternoons in the local library during the ’90s and early 2000s), a new Goosebumps series is coming to Disney+ and Hulu on Friday, October 13th, and we have a look at the official trailer ahead of its premiere.

"Goosebumps," the chilling new series inspired by R.L. Stine's worldwide bestselling book series, is set to debut across both Disney+ and Hulu on Friday, Oct. 13.

From Disney Branded Television and Sony Pictures Television, the 10-part series will launch with a five-episode drop as part of Disney+’s “Hallowstream” and Hulu’s “Huluween” celebrations, with subsequent new episodes streaming weekly.

Goosebumps: Justin Long is Possessed in Spooky Trailer for Disney+ & Hulu Reboot
Justin Long
Justin Long has had an excellent variety of roles throughout his career.

He's been in horrors, comedies, and everything in between.

We love a good mystery!

"Plunging viewers into a world of mystery and suspense, the new Goosebumps series follows a group of five high schoolers as they embark on a shadowy and twisted journey to investigate the tragic passing three decades earlier of a teen named Harold Biddle — while also unearthing dark secrets from their parents' past," the logline teases.

In addition to Long Goosebumps also stars Rachael Harris (Lucifer), alongside Zack Morris (EastEnders), Isa Briones (Star Trek: Picard), Miles McKenna (Guilty Party), Ana Yi Puig (Gossip Girl), and Will Price...

Warner Bros’ superhero sci-fi Blue Beetle and Universal’s canine comedy Strays head the new titles at the UK-Ireland box office, in a post-Barbenheimer test of how the market can handle two wide studio releases.

Opening in 556 cinemas, Blue Beetle is the third feature from Puerto Rican filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto. In the film, after an alien scarab chooses a teenager to be its symbiotic host, the youngster becomes the eponymous superhero with an unpredictable suit of armour.

Xolo Mariduena leads the cast, which also includes Bruna Marquezine, Damian Alcazar, George Lopez and Adriana Barraza.

Lionsgate to Buy eOne From Hasbro for $500 Million
Giovanni Michael Abate in Clifford, o Gigante Cão Vermelho (2021)
Lionsgate and Hasbro said on Thursday that they reached a deal for the media company to buy eOne, the toy giant’s film production company, for $500 million.

The deal includes $375 million in cash. The rest will involve Lionsgate assuming production financing loans for ongoing projects.

As part of the pact, Lionsgate also will acquire film development rights to Hasbro’s “Monopoly,” based on the enduring board game. Kevin Hart was cast to star in the film in 2019.

Wall Street was positive on the deal. Lionsgate shares edged up less than 1% in premarket trading, despite buyers typically seeing shares dip when a deal is announced. The stock closed at $7.98 Monday, up about 25% since the start of the year.

Hasbro shares rose about 2% in premarket trading after closing Wednesday at $64.37.

Hasbro has been shopping eOne, which co-produces films and television based on Hasbro IP as part of a production deal with Paramount,...

Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh: Pee-wee’s Playhouse “Changed the Trajectory” of His Career
Image
Devo lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh, who created the music for Paul Reubens’ series Pee-wee’s Playhouse and the 2016 movie Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, has paid tribute to the late actor and reflected upon how collaborating with Reubens “changed the trajectory” of his career in an interview with Yahoo Music.

“He always had a good personality and a good heart,” Mothersbaugh said about his longtime friend. “It’s just shocking and sad that he’s gone.” The Devo co-founder had no idea that Reubens had been privately battling cancer, adding, “We’d even been talking about working on an animated version of Pee-wee’s Playhouse.”

Mothersbaugh and Reubens met at the comedy improv theater the Groundlings when Mothersbaugh was dating founding member Laraine Newman (who was also part of the original Saturday Night Live cast). It was there that Mothersbaugh witnessed Reubens creating his Pee-wee Herman character. They kept in touch and first collaborated...

Hasbro Is Already Trying to Sell eOne
Image
Toymaker Hasbro is already trying to sell off eOne — or at least, the part of eOne that is “not directly supporting the Company’s Branded Entertainment strategy.” Hasbro, Inc. purchased Entertainment One for 3.8 billion in cash in December 2019.

Hasbro says that even with a sale of these particular TV and film pieces, it will “maintain the capability to develop and produce animation, digital shorts, scripted TV and theatrical films for audiences related to core Hasbro IP.”

Put simply, Hasbro wants to sell the parts of eOne that produces “The Woman King,” “Yellowjackets,” “The Rookie,” and “Naked & Afraid,” but keep the Transformers and Peppa Pig stuff. As a matter of fact, Hasbro plans to “significantly increase” its investment in its key brands, which also include Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, My Little Pony, Power Rangers, Play-Doh, Monopoly, and Clue. This sale could fund exactly that initiative. It could also...

Horror Reigns This October As ‘Halloween Ends’ Opens To 41 Million And ‘Smile’ Continues Its Phenomenal Holds
Pierce Brosnan, Aldis Hodge, Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Shahi, and Noah Centineo in Adão Negro (2022)
First up, the good news. This weekend had the best total box office in eight weekends, led by Halloween Ends, which had the best opening in 12 weekends. The weekend was 31 above last weekend and 39 above the average of the past seven weekends. After a disastrous two and a half month stretch, the box office is finally lifting back up, and next weekend it should vault above 100 million for the first time since July, led by the release of Black Adam.

As for the bad news, Halloween Ends’ 41.3 million opening was well below expectations, and it ranks as the lowest of the new trilogy. The iconic horror franchise was revived by director David Gordon Green who brought back Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode in the 2018 reboot Halloween. The film was a smash, opening to 76.2 million (still the third best ever for a horror film) and ultimately grossing 159 million domestically and 255 million worldwide,...

‘Smile’ Has Year’s Best Second Weekend Hold As It Falls Just 22, ‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile’ Bites Off A Meager 11.5 million, ‘Amsterdam’ Flops With 6.5 Million Start
Jamie Lee Curtis and James Jude Courtney in Halloween Ends: O Acerto de Contas Final (2022)
It was another lousy weekend with a total box office of just 57 million, the 11th in a row under 100 million and the seventh in a row under 65 million. There hasn’t been a stretch this bad since before the summer of 2021, but thankfully reinforcements are on the way. The next two weekends will see the releases of Halloween Ends and Black Adam, which will bring us to an era where these truly dire weekend grosses are exceptions rather than the norm.

As bad as the overall box office climate has been, there have still been glittery high points that show us that audiences are eager to show up if the content is there. The best example of that in the past two weeks is Smile, which opened to a solid 22.6 million last weekend and followed it up with a phenomenal 17.6 million, winning the weekend again as it dropped just 22. This...

Smile Beats Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile While Amsterdam Faces Trials At The Weekend Box Office
Image
Another weekend brings another serious dilemma for moviegoers: should Friday night be spent singing along with a talking crocodile or solving a mystery with three Hollywood superstars? Based on the box office numbers, the answer is ... neither! Why solve a crime or sing along when you can scream in terror thanks to Paramount's latest horror flick, "Smile."

In its second weekend at the box office, "Smile" is still going very strong. It's hard to believe that Parker Finn's directorial debut was once set to arrive exclusively to Paramount+, and execs have plenty to smile about after making the wise choice to premiere it in theaters instead. Per Variety, the film is now expected to beat out two other wide releases after earning 5.4 million on Friday from 3,659 theaters. This puts it ahead of both "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" and "Amsterdam," which earned 3.5 million and 2.6 million, respectively.

Based on the numbers,...

Box Office: ‘Smile’ Outpacing ‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile’ for No. 1 as ‘Amsterdam’ Bombs
Image
There’s one key question gripping the world this weekend: will the box office be smiling, or will it be Lyling?

Sony’s “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” had hopes to challenge for the top slot at the box office this weekend, though it seems that the family comedy won’t be able to outpace the second weekend of Paramount’s smash horror film “Smile.” Meanwhile, 20th Century Studios’ “Amsterdam” is bombing in its debut, aiming to finish in third.

“Lyle, Lyle” landed a 3.47 million opening day, screening in 4,350 locations. While that’s not exactly the most impressive opening day on paper, the majority of ticket sales for the musical will come with family audiences attending screenings on Saturday, Sunday and the Monday holiday of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which will keep a good fraction of kids out of school.

Sony is projecting a weekend gross between 12 million and 13.5 million for the musical,...

Rising TV Talent: 6 Showrunners to Watch
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Since a Top 50 cannot begin to scratch the surface in this drawn-out era of Peak TV — yes, it’s still Peak TV — THR wants to acknowledge six writer-producers who’ve made uniquely interesting moves in 2022.

Max Borenstein

Though he has more than a few creator credits on his résumé, Borenstein really courted the zeitgeist, controversy and even a little A-list ire with Lakers dynasty drama Winning Time on HBO.

Nkechi Okoro Carroll, Anna Fricke

The CW’s future may be in limbo, but its present is defined by two women building multiseries franchises (Okoro Carroll’s All American and Fricke’s Walker) as others get axed.

Chris Estrada

The stand-up who previously only dabbled in TV made his exceptional debut as a creator-star in August with This Fool, Hulu’s half-hour comedy about family dynamics set in a gang rehabilitation center.

Will Graham...

Box office preview: ‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile’ and David O. Russell’s ‘Amsterdam’ kick off October
Image
After a generally miserable September at the box office, October bursts in with the promise of at least two franchise films, although things will kick off mildly with two very different movies — one based on a children’s book and the other an original.

Sony’s “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” is the first new PG-rated family movie in over two months. It’s hard to imagine that families who have been desperate to get the kids out of the house won’t take advantage of a new movie that is appropriate for them. Based on the 1965 children’s book by Bernard Waber, the live action hybrid movie is directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck (“Blades of Glory”) and stars Javier Bardem, Constance Wu, Winslow Fegley, Brett Gelman and Scoot McNairy. More importantly, it features the singing voice of pop star Shawn Mendes as Lyle the Crocodile, performing songs that include...

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile Trailer: Shawn Mendes Becomes A Singing Crocodile Who Is Allegedly Friendly
Image
The complicated world of Hollywood is always a-changing, but if there's anything in this world that we can count on, it's talking animals befriending lonely children. In the vein of "Clifford The Big Red Dog," "Paddington" and maybe even "Detective Pikachu," comes "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile." Based on the best-selling book series by Bernard Waber, the film tells the story of a friendly crocodile who loves baths, singing, and his local community. Oh, and Lyle is voiced by pop-singing sensation Shawn Mendes.

Obviously, you have some questions: will there be an in-universe explanation for why Lyle the crocodile can sing? How many of Shawn Mendes' actual songs will be in the movie? Will it ever get less weird to hear the pop star's voice come out of a CGI crocodile? I can answer absolutely none of these questions but here's what we do know — "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" involves lots of hijinks...

‘SNL’ Departures: Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor, and Aristotle Athari Out Ahead of Season 48

“Saturday Night Live” is now sans a few more stars.

After longtime cast members Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, and Kyle Mooney parted ways with the sketch comedy series earlier this year, “SNL” has now confirmed that Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor, and Aristotle Athari will not be returning for the upcoming season.

Moffat, who frequently plays Eric Trump on the series, joined the cast for Season 42 as a featured player from 2016 through 2018. He was brought on as a full-time cast member in 2018. Villaseñor also became part of the “SNL” cast in Season 42, similarly starting as a featured player and along with Moffat, becoming a full time repertory player in 2018. Villaseñor started as a contestant on “America’s Got Talent” before booking “SNL.

Restraining Order Granted on Behalf of ‘Ferris Bueller’ Actress Edie McClurg in Elder Abuse Case
Matthew Broderick in Curtindo a Vida Adoidado (1986)
The conservator for “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” actress Edie McClurg was granted a restraining order against an alleged abuser on Tuesday, according to documents obtained by TheWrap.

The conservatorship was set up in 2019 and is run by “Life in Pieces” actress Angelique Cabral, whose mother is McClurg’s cousin.

The documents state that Cabral is “highly concerned” about a man named Michael Ramos, who has been living with the 78-year-old character actress and previously attempted to marry her. According to the documents, he sexually assaulted one of McClurg’s caregivers, and that woman fears he might also be assaulting McClurg.
