The John Wick franchise has a series of important characters besides Keanu Reeves' titular character. One of them is Ian McShane's Winston Scott.
McShane appeared in all four installments of the John Wick franchise and will reprise his role in the upcoming spinoff Ballerina. The character's past was also addressed in the spinoff prequel show The Continental. However, McShane has his own thoughts on Winston's backstory. In an interview with Cbr's Grae Drake, McShane dished on what his thoughts are on Winston's past, as well as the approach the Peacock show took with the character.
Winston is the owner of the Continental Hotel, which serves as a neutral territory for criminals and assassins. He has been John Wick's friend and ally, and has a lot of influence in the underworld society. Speaking about his character's history, McShane revealed that he doesn't claim the storyline his character has in the prequel show.

Old-guy hitman movies have been on a roll lately with Liam Neeson's In the Land of Saints and Sinners and Ian McShane's American Star (both released last year) proving to be strong recent entries in the genre. It's too bad then that Christoph Waltz's new addition to the canon, which is quite literally titled Old Guy, can't keep the good times going. Directed by the typically reliable Simon West, Old Guy looks the part of a classic, character-based action-thriller, but, ultimately, the script is far too flimsy for the film to coalesce into something interesting. It's too bad, as Waltz could almost certainly crush in one of these, given the right material.

There are 323 feature films eligible for the upcoming Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday, though a whopping 36% of those – 116 feature films – are not eligible for consideration in the Best Picture category.
The discrepancy between films that have qualified for the top category and films that are eligible in other categories comes either because the filmmakers did not attempt to qualify – likely the case for several documentary, animated or international films. Or because of new eligibility rules that require Best Picture candidates to meet additional benchmarks for diversity and inclusion. This is the second year that Representation and Inclusion Standards (Raise) have been enforced, though they did not appear to disqualify any serious contenders in the category.
Among titles excluded from Best Picture consideration are Andrea Arnold’s “Bird,” starring Barry Keoghan, Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Year,” Michael Keaton’s directorial debut “Knox Goes Away,...

Thanksgiving has long been a deadline of sorts for studios campaigning for Oscar nominations, because it offers the tempting proposition of a holiday weekend in which voters might have free time to catch up on movies. In past years, that meant a steady stream of screener DVDs arriving in voters’ mailboxes in the days before Thanksgiving – but now, with the Academy focusing on its members-only screening platform and placing restrictions on physical screeners, the push is to get new films into the Academy Screening Room before the holiday.
Fifteen new films were added to that room on Wednesday, a departure from the usual weekly additions, which typically come every Friday. The newcomers include Best Picture contenders “Conclave” and “The Piano Lesson,” following a Nov. 22 influx that included “Emilia Perez,” “Joker: Folie a Deux,” “Juror No. 2,” “Nightbitch,” “A Real Pain,” “The Room Next Door,” “Saturday Night” and “September 5.”

“American Star” is an introspective British thriller with Ian McShane in the lead role of Wilson, a mysterious hitman of few words. Filmed on location in Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, the English actor revels in the fact that his character “goes there and disobeys his first rule, which is, do the job and leave.” But is Wilson a government operative, a black ops soldier, or something else entirely? “There’s a whole other world out there we don’t know about,” McShane theorizes. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
The actor discusses some of Wilson’s quirks, including taking down a flower painting at his hotel and seemingly always wearing black. “In these three days, you get a reflection of what his life is,” McShane says. “He’s missed out on a lot, as exemplified by the people he comes into contact with. I’m not saying he regrets it,...

Best known for its slew of quality television shows, AMC+ doesnt necessarily have a large library of movie options. That being said, the films headed to the streaming platform in May 2024 certainly seem worth watching. By far one of the most inexpensive streaming services available, AMC+ is most definitely worth subscribing to, given the type of films offered on the platform, even if the list is much shorter than other services.
While there might only be three movies dropping on the platform next month, each one offers something completely different, which is worth exploring. With a British thriller about a hitman, a slow-burning French love story, and a psychological horror film that is certain to frighten just about anyone, AMC+ has quite the selection, even if the list is short. While each film wont necessarily appeal to every viewer, for those who love those particular genres, the movies are all but guaranteed to entertain.

American Star is a thriller starring Ian McShane as an aging hitman on his last assignment. The film rejects conventions and expectations, opting for a more understated and provocative narrative. McShane's performance injects humanity into the character, straddling the line between good and evil.
An aging hitman has become tired of his profession and wants out. Solitude, peace, and freedom are luxuries for a man drenched in blood. He is out on what could be his last job. One last job… well, we all know what that means. You might think you understand what will happen in American Star, but screenwriter Nacho Faerna and director Gonzalo López-Gallego have other plans in mind. They want the audience to discard any expectations and experience the journey.

Ian McShane hints at Winston's familial connection to John in John Wick: Chapter 4, but whether it's true or not remains unknown. The theory of Winston being John's father adds depth to their relationship, but it may undermine the moral compass and mystery of John's character. While confirming the familial connection could explain Winston's rebel actions, it may result in a clichéd storyline and take away from the nuance of their dynamic.
With the latest movie offering the biggest hint yet at their connection, Ian McShane responds to the Winston family fan theory in John Wick: Chapter 4. McShane's character has been a key ally for Keanu Reeves' titular assassin throughout the franchise, offering him support via the New York branch of The Continental, even at the risk of angering the High Table. Chapter 4 further pushed their connections as Winston was shown to have knowledge of John's Russian heritage, and even expressed "Farewell,...

The fun thing about hitman movies is they're malleable enough to fit almost any form. They can be action-packed (pick a John Wick movie), cool and calculating (last year's The Killer), or quiet and contemplative. American Star, a new film starring Wick's Ian McShane and directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego, falls firmly into that last camp. Yes, blood eventually does flow, but most of the movie's hour-and-46-minute runtime is concerned with non-violent affairs, most notably an aging killer's realization that there could be more to life past the isolated existence he's crafted for himself. Set in the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, American Star mixes a uniquely desolate landscape with strong cinematic visuals, creating a world that feels like the perfect setting for this tale. McShane anchors it all with a deliberate performance that feels like a contrast to some of his better-known work but is no less compelling.

Ian McShane hopes Keanu Reeves gets a well-deserved rest after the intense beatings John Wick has endured over the years. McShane acknowledges the inevitability of a fifth John Wick movie but suggests that Reeves takes a break for now. The potential ways for Keanu Reeves to return in John Wick 5 include faking his death or exploring his early years as an assassin in a prequel.
As the franchise's future plans slowly unfurl, Ian McShane addresses the recent John Wick 5 reports. Keanu Reeves' most recent outing, Chapter 4, memorably ended in a dramatic duel between the titular assassin and Donnie Yen's Caine in an effort to win his freedom from the High Table's grasp, resulting in John being victorious but seemingly succumbing to his wounds and dying. Despite this fitting closure, Lionsgate has been pushing forward with development on a John Wick 5, including inking a major deal with director Chad Stahelski...

Short days on site, nice rental cars, plus room and board — being a hitman doesn’t seem so bad. But a job is a job, and everybody deserves a vacation now and then. That’s what Wilson (Ian McShane) treats himself to in “American Star,” checking into a Canary Islands resort after discovering his target’s residence empty for the time being. A foreign location and senior citizen with a gun can often indicate a bargain bin actioner these days, but filmmaker Gonzalo López-Gallego surprises with an art-house touch, pushing his star into a considered, if also very safe, tranquility.
The director’s most rewarding decision: simply trusting McShane to summon the mood. Now 81 years old, the decorated English actor conveys a wealth of character with his delicate but steady gait, playing a hitman of few words. It’s beguiling enough to see Wilson scan an empty room for signs...

Ian McShane is 81, but you’d never know it watching him in “American Star.”
Also a producer of director Gonzalo López-Gallego’s new film, the English actor plays Wilson, a seasoned assassin who visits the Canary Islands’ Fuerteventura for a job, but instead unexpectedly becomes involved in the life of a French expatriate (Nora Arnezeder) and the lonely child of a vacationing couple (Oscar Coleman). From the first scene, McShane dances across the screen with the same effortlessness of a performer a quarter of his age, as his character reckons with an escalating series of disruptions to a sequence of events whose outcome is inevitable: someone dying of a bullet from his gun.
Though he’s been working in film, TV and theater for more than six decades, McShane has become well known in America largely in the last two, playing mentors and authority figures on series like “Deadwood” and “American Gods,...

Besides killing their targets with the greatest of ease, assassins on the big screen are also known for their cold and emotionless exterior. Until this protective shell is ripped away from the gunman, that is. In IFC Films' latest thriller, American Star, this doesn't happen to Ian Mcshane's Wilson because of suspenseful gunplay or a more powerful foe, but instead through encounters with interesting people and vast new surroundings. His once careless disposition is then temporarily exchanged for a renewed sense of life which, sadly, becomes his profession's greatest flaw. The older hitman who happens to be on his last job travels all the way to the island of Fuerteventura to kill a man who means nothing to him. When Wilson arrives, though, the target is not home and won’t be back for a period of time.

Ian McShane brutally slams The Continental, calling it a cash grab and stating he has no intentions of watching it. The Continental received mixed reviews, with critics praising its action style but criticizing its pace and underdeveloped story. The series didn't add much to the overall John Wick universe, and failed to bring something new to the table.
John Wick star Ian McShane brutally slams the existence of the franchise's prequel television series, The Continental: From the World of John Wick. McShane portrays Winston Scott in the main John Wick franchise. Colin Woodell plays a younger version of the character in the Peacock spinoff show, chronicling how Winston became proprietor of the New York Continental Hotel.

The Continental TV series, a spin-off of the John Wick franchise, received mixed reviews upon its release on Peacock. Ian McShane, who plays Winston Scott in the John Wick films, criticized The Continental and called it a "cash grab." McShane and other John Wick actors are expected to appear in future spin-offs, including the film Ballerina and a new anime series.
The Continental made its debut on Peacock earlier this year in September, with a three-episode season set in 1970s New York City. The series followed the origin of the hotel-for-assassins featured throughout the John Wick franchise, starring a young Winston Scott, played by Colin Woodell. The same character is played by Ian McShane in the films, appearing in all four installments thus far. By the time the John Wick movies begin, he is the owner of the New York Continental Hotel and a friend of Keanu Reeves's titular character.

January might still be cold and snowy in some parts of the world, but it's never a bad time for new movies. The highly anticipated Mean Girls sings its way into theaters with attitude aplenty. Horror lovers can rejoice with the delightfully varied Night Swim, Founders Day, and Destroy All Neighbors. Jason Statham and Ian McShane, meanwhile, play skilled killers who deal with emotions in different ways in The Beekeeper and American Star (kick ass or have feelings: your choice).

"Rule Number 1 – the less you know about the target, the better." IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for an assassin film called American Star, directed by Spanish filmmaker Gonzalo López-Gallego. There are no American actors in this movie, however, and the title is actually a reference to big shipwreck called the "American Star", which really exists and can be found on the west coast of the Fuerteventura island in the Canary Islands – which is where this film was shot and it also takes place. This 2024 films follows an assassin on his final assignment on Fuerteventura, who remains on the island while his target is delayed in arriving. He becomes drawn to the people he meets and a ghostly shipwreck which complicates his mission greatly when the target arrives. Ian McShane stars + produces, with Nora Arnezeder, Adam Nagaitis, Fanny Ardant, Oscar Coleman, Andres Gertrudix, and Thomas Kretschmann. This really doesn't look that bad,...
