The Nullarbor Nymph

Saw this movie at the film premiere in Ceduna which was a great night. For starters the film was nothing what I expected. I had seen the trailer and obviously it looked cheap, but for a film made for $25 000 it kept me well entertained with full on laughter.

Much of the humour in the film comes from the larger then life characters with the actual Nymph being used as more of a backdrop. She was a bit like the shark in Jaws with her scenes brief and relying more on the trapped characters to tell the story. The jokes in the film vary. Some of it is slap-stick, some gross-out and some is just plain sarcasm. There was even some very subtle jokes which I didn't pick up on until after leaving the show.

Surprisingly the people in the audience would have been between 40 to 60 years old and they loved it, even when it did push the boundaries. It also seemed to be more of a film for Women as they were clearly laughing the hardest as the male characters were being tormented.

I would say this film wouldn't be for everyone, but it was a great throw back to early 70's and 80's Australian genre films. I think the main thing to remember is that it was cheaply made but very entertaining as a result.

OK this isn't going to be like watching an epic Hollywood film - but for all the cheapness this actually works in a way.

The film maker seems to accept that the subject matter is basically laughable and here is an Australian mockumentry which goes back to the Ozploitation hey-days of the 70's.

I'd call this a beer and popcorn film and at the heart of it a great little cult Australian classic. (something which has been missing in recent years.) I laughed more in this than I would have watching some of the predictable comedies that come out of the States. Given it has basically no budget, minimal special effects and apparently a group of 'local' actors in it - You can't help but smirk a little in it's favor.
