50 Cent to Curate Free Action Channel on Roku
Image
50 Cent, the Grammy-winning rapper and star of such high-octane films as “Setup” and “Freelancers,” is curating his own action channel on Roku.

In partnership with Lionsgate, the free, ad-supported channel will launch Dec. 10 on The Roku Channel. It will feature 50 Cent’s personal favorite films and TV series drawn from Lionsgate’s library of 20,000-plus titles, including “The Expendables,” “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” “Rambo” and a handful of movies starring the rapper himself. The 50 Cent Action Channel will also run episodes of “Power,” the drama series executive produced by 50 Cent that spawned the Power Universe.

The channel will also connect its programming to 50 Cent’s music, including a heist-themed stunt tied to his landmark album “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” with films like “Empire State,” “Reservoir Dogs” and “Man on a Ledge” — as well as a female-led action stunt based on his album “I Like the Way She Do It,...

Where & When Will Sound Of Freedom Release On Streaming?
Image
The 2023 action film Sound of Freedom is based on the true story of Tim Ballard, an ex-Department of Homeland Security agent who set out to rescue children from sex trafficking. Jim Caviezel stars as the protagonist in the movie, which opened to rave reviews and an unexpected surge at the box office during the first week of July 2023. It held its own against the high-profile film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, as they both made around $11 million on July 4, which was Sound of Freedom's opening day in theaters.

Sound of Freedom hails from a small media company and film distribution studio — Angel Studios, which has released movies such as Testament: The Parables Retold and His Only Son and television shows like The Chosen, The Wingfeather Saga, Freelancers, and Jungle Beat. But the studio's most recent film is bringing notoriety to the company. Now that the attention...

Britain’s First Lady of TV Action Thrillers Keeley Hawes Survives a Shoot-Out in ‘Crossfire’ – Trailer (Exclusive)
Image
Britain’s leading lady of the TV action thriller, Keeley Hawes, is back.

The star of “Bodyguard” returns in “Crossfire,” another nail-biting thriller for the BBC in which Hawes plays a holidaymaker whose sunbathing session on her hotel balcony becomes a nightmare when shots ring out across the complex, turning her world upside down.

The scenario will remind audiences of her turn as the U.K. home secretary alongside Richard Madden’s bodyguard in the eponymous BBC drama, which became a global hit when it was picked up by Netflix.

The setting for “Crossfire,” however, is a far cry from London’s Westminster, instead set at a luxury resort in the Canary Islands.

Produced by Fremantle’s Dancing Ledge Productions (“The Salisbury Poisonings”), the drama is the first original series from author Louise Doughty, who previously adapted her novel “Apple Tree Yard” for a hugely popular BBC limited series.

Early Edition Reboot Will Star Alice Eve As A Journalist Who Gets Tomorrow's News Today
Kyle Chandler and Shanesia Davis in Edição de Amanhã (1996)
The "Early Edition" reboot pilot at CBS has found its lead in "Freelancers" and "Star Trek: Into Darkness" star Alice Eve. According to Variety, the actress will star in the series as an intrepid journalist who magically gets tomorrow's news delivered today. The original version of the series followed Kyle Chandler ("Friday Night Lights") as a man who had the next day's edition of the Chicago Sun-Times delivered to him by a mysterious cat, but there's no word on whether or not the reboot will also feature a fantastical feline friend.

The idea of getting a newspaper with tomorrow's news on it is kind...

‘Early Edition’ Reboot Pilot at CBS Casts Alice Eve in Lead Role
Image
Alice Eve is set to headline the “Early Edition” reboot pilot at CBS, Variety has confirmed.

In the rebooted version, ambitious but uncompromising journalist Beth (Eve) starts receiving tomorrow’s newspaper today. She then finds herself in the complicated business of changing the news instead of reporting it.

Beth is further described as the executive producer of Ksea, a local Seattle TV news station. A journalist/investigative reporter since she was a kid, Beth is very focused on getting the story no matter what, which sometimes puts her at odds with her beloved mentor, Tommy, who believes that the most important thing about a story is the people and its human toll.

Eve most recently appeared in the Epix series “Belgravia” and the feature “Warning.” Next up, she will be seen in the films “The Infernal Machine,” “Freelancers,” “The Queen Mary,” and the series “The Power” for Amazon. Her past...

Hulu New Releases: August 2021
D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Paulina Alexis, Lane Factor, and Devery Jacobs in Reservation Dogs (2021)
While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.

Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.

Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

Decal is plotting a hybrid theatrical and VOD release this fall. The film was produced by Sorø Films Production in partnership with BuzzFeed Studios. Scott Christopherson, Babetta Kelly and Abi Nielson Hunsaker served as producers.

Robert Mitchum in Crossfire Available on Blu-ray From Warner Archive
Image
Robert Mitchum in Crossfire (1947) is available on Blu-ray from Warner Archive. Order it Here

Years of police work have taught Detective Finlay that where there’s crime, there’s motive. But he finds no usual motive when investigating a man’s death by beating. The man was killed because he was a Jew. “Hate,” Finlay says, “is like a gun.” Robert Young portrays Finlay, Robert Mitchum is a laconic army sergeant assisting in the investigation of G.I. suspects, and Robert Ryan plays a vicious bigot in a landmark film noir nominated for five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture. Edward Dmytryk directs, draping the genre’s stylistic backdrops and flourishes around a topic rarely before explored in films: anti-Semitism in the U.S. Here, Hollywood takes aim at injustice…and catches bigotry in a Crossfire.

Special Features: Commentary by Film Historians Alain Silver and James Ursini, with Audio Interview Excerpts...

Best Supporting Actress Oscar winners: Who won for just 5 minutes of screen time?
Image
With a screen time total of 18 minutes and 36 seconds, Laura Dern’s 2020 Best Supporting Actress-winning performance in “Marriage Story” was noted for its brevity. However, it ranks as the 24th shortest to ever win in the Oscar category, proving the academy’s particular and everlasting fondness for smaller supporting female roles. Here is a look at the 10 winners with the least amount of screen time. (And here’s the equivalent list for Best Supporting Actor.)

10. Jo Van Fleet (“East of Eden”)

15 minutes, 4 seconds (12.82% of the film)

After a decade of stage acting, Tony winner Jo Van Fleet earned an Oscar for her film debut as child abandoner and brothel operator Kate Ames. Many of the votes she received were likely in honor of her body of work in 1955, since she also had roles in two other Oscar-nominated films that year (“I’ll Cry Tomorrow” and “The Rose Tattoo”). Her few scenes in “East of Eden,...

Gal Gadot in Mulher-Maravilha 1984 (2020)
HBO Max New Releases: December 2020
Gal Gadot in Mulher-Maravilha 1984 (2020)
Time and time again during this year’s pandemic, movie studios have had to make the best of a bad situation. HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2020 comes along with the most extreme example yet.

WarnerMedia undoubtedly had big plans for Wonder Woman 1984 when it scheduled it for a holiday release last year. After moving it to the summer, however, the conglomerate had to delay its theatrical release time and time again. Now HBO Max is the lucky winner of the saga, as it gets to premiere the long-awaited sequel on its servers on Dec. 25.

While Wonder Woman 1984 is definitely the headline this month, there are some other intriguing streaming options for HBO Max in December. The month plays host to a whole host of high-powered documentaries like Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults (Dec. 3), Alabama Snake (Dec. 9), and the Tiger Woods documentary Tiger (Dec.

Tucker Carlson Sees ‘Never-Ending Assault’ on His Fox News Show. Critics See Racism
Image
Tucker Carlson’s top-rated Fox News Channel hour has hit record ratings highs in recent months amid the rising tide for news networks as the presidential election draws near. Record ratings usually means record revenue for ad-supported TV shows.

But “Tucker Carlson Tonight” has never been more difficult to monetize for the news network amid today’s polarized political environment. Advertisers face heavy pressure to stay away from his show for what his critics say is a tendency to fan racist rhetoric. Carlson says he has the backing of Fox News barons Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch, which means that his show isn’t going away and he doesn’t care if that prospect horrifies those who have been working for his demise.

In a lengthy interview, Carlson tells Variety he’s spent months in the trenches “fighting a never-ending assault to take us off the air” by critics who...

Reese Schonfeld Dies: A Founder Of CNN And The Food Network Was 88
Image
Maurice “Reese” Schonfeld, who helped found CNN with Ted Turner and created the early breakout show Crossfire but later had a well publicized falling out with the controversial billionaire, died Tuesday from complications of Alzheimer’s disease at his home in Manhattan. He was 88.

His death was announced by CNN, widow Pat O’Gorman and daughter Juliette Reverand. O’Gorman told the cable news network: “He loved CNN. He was very proud of it. It was a good time for him.”

Born in Newark, NJ, Schonfeld began his own business in 1975 providing news footage to local TV stations, and in 1979 joined Atlanta businessman Turner to launch a nationwide news endeavor to be called CNN, combining his TV experience with Turner’s deep pockets.

According to CNN, Schonfeld was responsible for hiring many of the new network’s news anchors who would quickly become the channel’s first generation of well-known journalists: Bernard Shaw,...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Brides Of Blood (1968)
Image
You’ll have to excuse me. Lately I’ve been gravitating towards a particular corner of the genre room, one in which a lot of films clamor for space and I don’t always recognize the labels. Brides of Blood (1968) is in that corner, one in which Filipino exploitation meets old fashioned horror tropes to the advantage of both.

Released at the end of May stateside by the Philippines' own Hemisphere Pictures, Brides of Blood did well for the company in drive-ins everywhere - well enough that two more sequels followed, Mad Doctor of Blood Island (also ‘68) and Beast of Blood (1970). But Brides is actually the second in what came to be known as the Blood Island series; this was preceded by Terror is a Man (1959) almost ten years prior.

Rudimentary knowledge for some, no doubt; but I’m a Blood Island virgin you see, and my late arrival to...

‘Irresistible’ Review: Jon Stewart Returns with a Toothless Political Satire Out of Touch with Trump Era
Image
The most famous TV moment of Jon Stewart’s 16-year tenure as the host of “The Daily Show” actually happened on a different program altogether, as the sober-minded satirist dropped by CNN’s “Crossfire” in 2004 and nuked the long-running political debate program from the inside out like an oil rigger detonating a truth bomb from deep within the heart of a giant asteroid before it wipes out all intelligent life on Earth. Referring to hosts Tucker Carlson and Paul Begala as “partisan hacks” and pleading with them to “stop hurting America,” Stewart accused “Crossfire” and the rest of its ilk of being glorified noise pollution — of turning public discourse into political theater and making it harder for people across the country to hear each other clearly.

It was a pyrrhic victory. While the segment proved so devastating that “Crossfire” was soon ethered out of existence, shows like it have only...

Jon Stewart Says Giving a Platform to Bill O’Reilly Is the ‘Worst Legacy’ of ‘The Daily Show’

It’s been five years since Jon Stewart retired from “The Daily Show,” and the veteran comedian is still closely following politics and the news media. Stewart, who hosted the late-night show for 16 years, recently spoke to the New York Times’ David Marchese in a wide-ranging interview about current events, contemporary news coverage, and his legacy at “The Daily Show.”

His opinion on the latter-most point stemmed from a question regarding the current state of Fox News. Former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly was a frequent guest on “The Daily Show” during Stewart’s tenure and Stewart said that consistently giving O’Reilly such a large platform was possibly the worst aspect of his work on the comedy show.

“The question was always, ‘Why would you talk to him? Why do you have him on the show if you can’t destroy him?’ If you want to talk about the...

How Izzy Demsky became Kirk Douglas: the ultimate Hollywood makeover
The scrawny son of Jewish immigrants transformed himself into an icon of Us manhood – a narrative the nation is forgetting in the Trump era. Yet a darker side lurked too

Handsome, muscular, noble – not words that would automatically have been associated with a Yiddish-speaking schmutter-seller’s son whose family were not long off the boat from what is now Belarus. But we know better: in these nativist times, it is worth remembering that Izzy Demsky was the beneficiary of the ultimate Hollywood makeover: the scrawny, hustling scion of immigrants who evolved into Kirk Douglas, the acme of all-American manhood, and evolved once again into a sensitive, politically conscious standard-bearer for liberalism.

Douglas, who has died aged 103, became an unrecognisable figure from that of his childhood. His story follows a near-mythic immigrant arc that the Us has chosen to ignore in the Trump era. In this he was aided by physiognomy:...

Hulu in November: Here’s Everything Coming and Going
Fall is upon us, and so is Hulu’s list of every title coming and going from the streaming service in November.

Among the list of arriving titles is a new episode of Hulu’s original monthly anthology series, “Into the Dark.” November’s episode is called “Pilgrim,” and claims to be inspired by true events — in which a woman invites a bunch of Pilgrim re-enactors over for Thanksgiving dinner. But things get spooky when the “actors” refuse to break character.

Other new arrivals include Season 5 of “You’re the Worst,” described as a modern look at love, the complete first seasons of “Dollface,” about a young woman re-entering the world of women, “The Accident,” which begins with a deadly explosion at a construction site, and “Love Island: Australia,” an answer to the U.K. and U.S. versions of the beloved reality dating show.

Crossfire

Stars: Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, Forest Whittaker, Robert DeNiro | Written by L. Philippe Casseus | Directed by Jessy Terrero
