Entertaining show, with a moral. Parent approved... ;-)

I was amazed by a couple of very negative reviews of this show. In fact I was moved enough to register on the site simply so I could try to address some of the points raised. Please understand I'm not attacking these original reviewers - they are entitled to their opinions! I'm just trying to put some balance to the comments that appear to have made the show rate way lower than I believe it deserves.

The first was about a single episode where one of the characters is suspected of taking some boots. The reviewer had never seen any other show and immediately jumped on the fairy being black so that must have been why they were suspected - which is a little sad that they thought that when the characters made it quite clear that in an earlier episode it had been shown how much (more than the others) she really loved boots.... if cookies disappeared on Sesame St, you'd probably ask the Cookie monster where he'd been....

The other review suggested that a US cable TV channel had taken one of their existing shows and copied it. In fact both shows were made by different companies (Flapjack by the cartoon network, and Pearlie by a co-production between an Australian producer & Canadian animation studio), and even if there are similarities there are also differences. No doubt similarities between Flapjack and other shows could also be made if you looked hard enough. Frankly, complaints such as the show (an animated show about fairies, for goodness sake!) being too colourful indicates that the reviewer simply was watching the wrong show for them and was not giving an unbiased opinion. It was like a review about cats from a dog lover.

So. That's off my chest. The show is actually a spin off from a series of children books written by an Australia comedienne, Wendy Harmer. They are written with humour, but also with various overlying moral themes generally about 'doing the right thing' - being responsible for your actions, helping others, being kind, etc. My two girls loved the books, and also the animated series (many of the episodes were also written by Wendy or based on stories from the books) - although their (and my) preference was probably for the books. Is the series a classic? Well, no. But it is at worst harmless, and is definitely better than many other shows out there that try to be too smart or hip for their own good. My girls (9 & 7) would rate it a ten out of ten. My son (7) would rate it maybe a 5 (Clone Wars would be a ten for him). As a parent, I'd rate it seven & a half out of ten.... maybe a borderline 8.

So in short, don't be put off by the low rating in IMDb. It's not perfect, but the show is decent enough, many episodes have some underlying moral theme, and overall it's approved by this parent!

Why Qubo is going down hill

Remember my earlier review? Well now, this hopefully will a cleaner version of it. This is the worst Qubo show ever made. I've said that with This Just In and The Goode Family, but this is the worst. It's about this fairy who find weird stuff at the park. And all show's antagonist are complete idiots. First off, this show rips off a way better version of this show, Flapjack. Even the theme song rips it off. I mean, think of Pearlie as Flapjack, Jasper as K'nuckles and Ople as Bubbie.

Second of all, the Villains all have a problem. Gobsmack, who is the worst character of the show is a huge idiot and is a rip-off of Wario. Saphira is as dumb as him. Also, why does Gobsmack have a big nose? And Moe is basically some daisy cutting pixie and appearance are basically wrong. Did the creators thing it's drugs solve all there problems?

Third, the animation & voices. It's too colorful and loud that it wants you blind and death. It even looks like Homestar Runner on drugs.

And fourth, what was Qubo thinking? Did they suddenly give up at airing good shows. Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat, Oggy and The Cockroaches and (an English dub for) Bomberman Jetters would of made a great qubo block, but why air this? This is another show for stoners. Okay,in a recap, this is basically the worst flash cartoon ever made. It makes Yakkity Yak look like the best cartoon ever made. Qubo, please air Twisted Tales of Felix, Oggy, Spaceballs: The Animated Series, Mr. Bean: The Animated Series, Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island and many more of trues classics back on the air. I want this to be off the air now,and when I mean now,I mean NOW!

    Pink is best

This is a lovable show. Taking the funny Pearlie In The Park book series and making a show is just great, my girls absolutely love Pearlie and her friends and their park antics. Although the rats can freak them out a bit (they are very sensitive!) the overall retro feel of the show is so refreshing in a dragonballz era of cartoons. Even the music matches the vintage cartoony feel.

People don't seem to like the mix of Aussie and American voices but it really works and shows the characters uniqueness.

You can never have enough pink!

    Go Pearlie!

A Must See Cartoon For The Whole Famly

If you love cartoons, you'll love "Pearlie". Based on the books by Australian comedienne and author Wendy Harmer, "Pearlie" is surely to delight young and old alike. The artwork and story lines are top notch and the voices are perfect to each individual character. You can tell the entire production is lovingly put together by people who really take pride in bringing quality entertainment to the entire family. The setting for "Pearlie" takes place in "Jubilee Park", located in a big city. Like all parks, "Jubilee park" is watched over by fairies and other mythical beings. The title character, "Pearlie" is in charge of overseeing the day to day operations at the park. She's a young, hardworking fairy who's always busy planning this, or with her wand, fixing that. She is very friendly and outgoing, and sometimes she gets into trouble because of her good-hearted nature. Her immediate supervisor from "Fairy HQ" is "Gobsmack", a fairy who's always "popping up" when least expected and who isn't always on "Pearlie's" side. He sometimes sides with "Pearlie's" slightly evil cousin, "Saphira". who operates a spa in the park's green house, and her bat servant "Ludwig" (who worships the ground she walks on regardless of how she treats him). "Saphira" usually tries to get "Pearlie" in trouble with "fairy HQ" so that they will fire her and she won't have to deal with her "perfectly perfect cousin" anymore. Her plans usually backfire, and every now and then, she does help her cousin out. "Pearlie" has a trainee working with her by the name of "Opal". "Opal" is from the Australian Outback and she is best friends with "Pearlie" She's a bit more cynical of the world around her, and sometimes for good reason, especially with "Gobsmack" and "Saphira" hanging around. "Jasper is the elf in the park. He's part of "Pearlie's" team, as well as her best friend. Slightly on the laid back side, the dread-lock-wearing "Jasper" would rather play his bongos than work, but he respects "Pearlie" enough to do his part and to help his friends out of trouble. Other characters that show up are the park rats "Scragg" and "Mr. Flea". They are kind of like "Abbott and Costello" with tails. "The rats" provide headaches for "Pearlie" sometimes, but they have a respect for each other. "Great Aunt Garnett" is "Pearlie's" aunt. She runs the fairy store in the clock tower across the street from the park. She is a fun loving fairy who helps "Pearlie" out with potions, spells, and whatever she may need to take care of a problem or situation. Trouble is, sometimes "Aunt Garnett's" help is worse than what she's trying to help out with. By the end of the 15 minute episode though, all is well. Other colourful characters inhabit "Jubillee Park", and they appear on various episodes. The stories are written in a manner that can be enjoyed by those of any age. Most stories teach children the value of friendship, respect, and the value of right from wrong. If you are looking for a great cartoon in the tradition of the classic Warner Bros. way, look no further than "Pearlie". The show truly is "magic in the city".
