Simon Kinberg's action thriller with a 24% Rotten Tomatoes score has become a Netflix hit. Though his first screenwriting credits were XXX: State of the Union and Mr and Mrs. Smith (both 2005), Kinberg rose to prominence writing and producing several films for the X-Men franchise, including Last Stand (2006), First Class (2011), Days of Future Past (2014), and Apocalypse (2016).

In addition to X-Men, Kinberg has written or produced several other notable films, some of which were also for 20th Century Fox, including Sherlock Holmes (2009), Elysium (2013), Fantastic Four, Cinderella, Chappie (all 2015), and Murder on the Orient Express (2017). Kinberg also produced Ridley Scott's The Martian, for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

Starring Riz Ahmed and Lily James, the gripping, intense suspense thriller Relay, releases on August 22nd. Even before I go into details, with no spoilers, I have to say this is a film you do not want to miss.

Directed by David Mackenzie, this cool thriller is full of taut tension, suspense, and mystery from the very first moment, and it never really lets up. It is brilliantly written, terrifically paced, and outstandingly performed. But more on that in a few lines. First, let’s set the scene.

In Relay, Riz Ahmed plays a world-class “fixer” who specializes in brokering lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals, whistleblowers, who threaten their ruin.

Lily James is set to star in Swiped, an intriguing new biopic from Hulu, which will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and has just released its first trailer. Swiped is a biopic about American entrepreneur Whitney Wolfe Herd (James), founder and former CEO of Bumble, as well as co-founder of Tinder.

Whitney Wolfe Herd is credited with vital branding and marketing decisions behind Tinder, but resigned in 2014, and shortly thereafter filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the company. The Oscars will launch its first wave of digital screeners on Friday, Aug. 15, for its 11,000+ members to consider for the 98th Academy Awards, which will mark the official start of awards season as studios vie for voters’ attention on the members-only streaming platform.

The Academy Screening Room will debut its initial slate of films from distributors that met the July 31 submission deadline. New movies will be uploaded every Friday, until the end of the season across all categories, including best picture and specialty races such as documentary, animated, international feature and the shorts.

Chris Hemsworth's submarine thriller, Subversion, casts its female lead in the form of an Emmy-nominated star. Earlier this year, it was announced that Hemsworth would be starring in a submarine action thriller for Amazon MGM Studios, directed by Patrick Vollrath, whose debut feature was the plane hijack thriller 7500, with a script written by Andrew Ferguson, known only for the short film Love Thy Neighbor.

Another “Cinderella” story is in the works at Disney, but this time from the perspective of the princess’ fairy godparents.

Based on the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, the Disney+ limited series is under development from Skydance Television, Concord Originals and Nuyorican Productions with Jennifer Lopez attached to executive produce.

The fresh take on the 1957 musical version will be written by “The Baby-Sitters Club” creator Rachel Shukert, who is set to executive produce and serve as showrunner. She has also executive produced “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Glow” and “Nine Perfect Strangers.”

In addition to Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina will executive produce for Nuyorican Productions along with Sophia Dilley and Scott Pascucci for Concord Originals and Bill Bost.

The original musical version of the classic fairytale debuted in 1957 with Julie Andrews as the princess in the glass slippers. Later, a 1997 television remake starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother.

Over the years, Cinderella has had many adaptations. The folk story of a young girl living in unfortunate circumstances and blessed with a life-changing decision after marrying has been around for centuries, although it's mostly famous thanks to the Disney adaptation.

Cinderella was adapted into opera, theater, musicals, films, and TV. Walt Disney entered the conversation in 1950, giving the character, who is now considered one of the Disney Princesses, her first adaptation. Jennifer Lopez has been interested in a new version of the story for years, and she is now partnering with Disney+ for a new version, Deadline reports.

Lopez has been attached to the limited series based on Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella since May 2022. The singer and actress' production company, Nuyorican Productions, was working with Skydance Television and Concord Originals. The same production companies are still attached to the project, which has now officially landed at Disney+.

Exclusive: That limited series we first told you about based on Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella from Skydance Television, Concord Originals and Jennifer Lopez’s Nuyorican has landed at Disney+, we hear. The project remains in development.

We understand there was a bidding war between Disney and Amazon for the project, which is from the perspective of the fairy godparents. It is written by Rachel Shukert, who is still attached as EP and showrunner.

The UTA-repped Shukert is an EP on Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers, as well as an EP on the streamer’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and the showrunner of Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club.

In addition to Shukert, executive producers include Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina for Nuyorican Productions; Sophia Dilley, EVP of Concord Originals and co-president of Rko; former Concord CEO Scott Pascucci; and Bill Bost.

Lionsgate has named Erin Westerman president of its Motion Picture Group, TheWrap has learned. Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair, shared the news Thursday.

In her role, Westerman will oversee all aspects of the development and production of Lionsgate’s slate of theatrical film releases. She will report to Fogelson.

“Erin’s profound impact on our studio cannot be overstated,” Fogelson said in a statement to TheWrap. “She has earned the respect of her peers and talent through hard work, incredible story sense, and great choices, whether related to cast or the direction of some of our most important IP. However, it is her fierce intelligence, passion for theatrical moviegoing, and ease of manner that have made Lionsgate an attractive home for filmmakers who continue to do their most creative work here. There has been a rise in Bible-based tales and series, with shows such as Dallas Jenkins' The Chosen leading the way. Fox has gotten in on the act, as the network has announced its first cast members for its anticipated Biblical event series The Faithful, from Carol Mendelsohn. Per reports, Minnie Driver, Jeffrey Donovan, and Natacha Karam are all attached to star in the first part of the three-part series, which will look to tell some of the most iconic tales from the Old Testament from the lens of its most influential women. The six-episode Biblical limited series will see Driver play Sarah, Donovan will portray Abraham and Karam is set as Hagar in the series' first part. It will be directed and executive produced by Danny Cannon.

The Faithful has found its first three cast members!

As previously announced, the show will be told through the lens of five of The Old Testament’s most important women: Sarah and her servant Hagar, Sarah’s great-niece Rebekah, and Rebekah’s nieces, sisters Leah and Rachel.

Production is set to begin this summer in Rome and Matera, Italy. It will air throughout the Easter and Passover season on Fox and the next day on Hulu.

Mark Brokaw, a prolific director of Off Broadway, Broadway and regional stage productions who beginning in the 1990s worked with some of the brightest emerging playwrights including Douglas Carter Beane, Kenneth Lonergan, Nicky Silver, Paula Vogel and Lynda Barry, died Sunday, June 29, following a battle with cancer. He was 66.

His death was confirmed by the actor Camryn Manheim on social media. “My beautiful friend Mark Brokaw lost his battle with cancer this morning….Today, we lost a beautiful, gifted, beloved friend, artist, husband, and son. The entire theater community is grieving today. I will miss him terribly.”

Netflix has greenlit a new thriller series from Jed Mercurio with Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Richard Madden attached to star.

Variety has learned that the series, titled “Trinity,” has been picked up for eight episodes. The official logline states, “A heroic female Naval Officer (Mbatha-Raw) becomes involved with the outwardly charismatic Secretary of Defense (Madden), only to discover he may be at the heart of a dangerous conspiracy.”

Mbatha-Raw’s character is named Commander Katherine Decker, described as serving “as second-in-command on the USS Kansas, a nuclear submarine and one of the deadliest weapons on Earth.” Madden will star in the series as Secretary of Defense Webb Preston. “With a technology background that makes him different from most politicians, Webb’s innovation and purpose are seen as a threat in more ways than one,” per the character description.

Mercurio serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the series under his Hat Trick Mercurio (Htm) banner.

In 2010, Disney scored an unexpectedly large hit with Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland," a film that cost a sizable $200 million to make but which inexplicably raked in over a billion dollars worldwide. Disney has been producing live-action remakes of some of their most beloved animated films for quite some time, but this practice has particularly dominated the studio's ambitions since 2010, when "Alice in Wonderland" grossed over $1 billion. Bridgerton Season 4, which Netflix confirmed would be Benedict's season, has wrapped filming. The series, which adapts Julia Quinn's book series of the same name following the high-society Bridgerton family and its eight siblings, switched the adaptation order for Season 3, which should've been Benedict's season, to Penelope and Colin. On Friday, Netflix posted a video online revealing before and after shots of the cast members in and out of costume after completing their scenes.
