Xavier Gens, the popular genre filmmaker behind Netflix’s hit shark movie “Under Paris,” “Mayhem!” and “Gangs of London,” will next direct “Lady Chang.” The Thailand-set psychological thriller will be headlined by up-and-comer Anais Parello (“Under Paris”). Studiocanal will distribute in France and will handle international sales.

The film will also star Pascale Arbillot and Anne Marivin, as well as Franck Dubosc (“Rolling to You”), an actor well known for starring in successful French comedies who will make a rare incursion in a non-comedic role.

“Lady Chang” is produced by Vincent Roget via his and Gens’ Same Player outfit, and co-produced by genre specialists Wtf films. Set to start shooting on location on May 12 for nine weeks, the film has also been acquired by Amazon Prime Video, as well as the broadcaster France Televisions and pay TV channel Ocs. Australian indie horror director Sean Byrne has a new shark attack film that has struck global distribution deals. Dubbed a "shark-meets-serial-killer" movie, the film will see a shark-obsessed serial killer (Suicide Squad's Jai Courtney) abduct a free-spirited surfer named Zephyr, played by Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone). He takes her out to sea in a boat, where she has to figure out how to escape before he "ritualistically feeds her to the sharks below," according to the plot. Joining the cast is Josh Heuston (Dune: Prophecy), who will play Zephyr's boyfriend, Moses. It sounds like a clever plot.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film was shot last year on the Gold Coast of Australia, and was written by newcomer, Nick Lepard, who also wrote Keeper, Osgood Perkins' new film following The Monkey. The majority of the theatrical rights to the international market have already been sold by Mister Smith Entertainment.

One of its surprise hits is the French action thriller Ad Vitam. The series premiered on the platform on Jan. 10, 2025, and has been raking in major views since its release, dominating the non-English charts. The film's ongoing popularity led to Ad Vitam joining Netflix's Most Popular Non-English Movies list, per Tudum.

Ad Vitam joined the list with 56 million views, and 91.5 million hours viewed. The French action thriller's success might not end here because it's close to replacing No. 9 on the list, the 2022 Italian film My Name is Vendetta, which has only 400,000 views more than Ad Vitam.

Netflix recently released the data of the top 10 most-watched films in 2024. The Millie Bobby Brown-led Damsel tops the chart with 143.8 million views in total, followed by Lift with 129.4 million views. Though most of the top 10 films have been released in recent years, the list also includes some all-time classics, such as 2015's Minions and 2017's The Boss Baby.

Three of the ten movies are made for audiences of all ages, and two are rom-coms. From the most recent shark movie, Under Paris, to the heartbreaking retelling of a 1975 plane crash, the most-streamed films of the year cover a wide range of genres. In the digital age, where many movies are primarily made for streaming services, the quality of these films can be uneven.

Netflix’s La Palma is trending on a new TV ratings chart, despite having a less-than-stellar 28% audience score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The Norwegian disaster drama reached fifth place the week of Dec. 19 through Dec. 25, 2024, on Reelgood, which tracks audience interest, per Screen Rant.

Reelgood’s top five list also includes: Paramount+’s Dexter: Original Sin, Apple TV+’s Shrinking, and The Agency from Showtime. The top spot for the week of Dec. 19 to 25 went to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone.

Netflix's latest disaster show is trending on a new streaming chart despite a weak reception from audiences. Stories of disaster, both real and fictional, have tended to find an audience on Netflix. Society of the Snow, from director J.J. Bayona, was the third most-watched Netflix film for the first half of 2024. The drama unfolds in 1972, focusing on the true story of a Uruguayan rugby team's experience in 1972 and their ordeal after a flight crashed in the Andes Mountains.

Under Paris was also not too far behind as the fourth most-watched film during that same period. Directed by Xavier Gens, who wrote the script with Yannick Dahan, Maud Heywang, Yaël Langmann and Olivier Torres, the French film centered on a grieving marine biologist who has to save Paris from a giant shark. As the new year begins, though, a miniseries, with only four episodes, is showing signs of success.

Netflix has announced the creation of Troll 2, the sequel to its globally acclaimed Norwegian monster movie, which will be released in 2025. The news follows the original film’s success, which enthralled international audiences and broke streaming records.

The first Troll film, which aired in December 2022, was a watershed moment for Netflix. It grossed an incredible 103 million views and became the platform’s most-watched non-English language film. Roar Uthaug, who developed the concept over two decades, will return to direct the sequel.

The film will have a new ensemble cast, including Sara Khorami, Jon Ketil Johnsen, and Gard B. Eidsvold. While precise narrative details remain unknown, the original film’s idea revolved around a huge 150-foot troll rising in the Norwegian highlands and destroying the country’s capital.

Netflix presented its first international showcase yesterday with a look at what is coming down down the pike. Below is a preview of what’s on deck for feature films. Of note, was the title announcement and treatment of the Japanese movie Bullet Train Explosion. We have great news to share for fans of the hit French shark movie Under Paris. An Under Paris 2 is reportedly in development at Netflix, which means we're in for another crazy underwater adventure!

The first film was a smash hit when it landed on Netflix back in June 2024, eventually earning the title of the second most popular non-English movie on Netflix, right behind the epic monster film Troll. That's why it's not completely surprising that a sequel is in the works.

Also, the star of Under Paris, Bérénice Bejo, spilled in a recent interview with LA Tribune that production on a sequel will start in September 2025. However, there wasn't any confirmation at the time that an Under Paris 2 was actually in the works. Now, it seems that we have that confirmation.

So it’s no surprise to hear, via Variety, that a sequel is in development. Both Gens and star Bérénice Bejo, who received an Oscar nomination for her role in the 2011 silent film The Artist, are expected to return for Under Paris 2. Bejo has even been quoted as saying that the sequel would begin filming in September of next year, but Variety’s sources cautioned that the project is still in early stages and might not make it into production until 2026.

2024 has been a year filled with many exciting titles and Netflix did its dues. Under Paris premiered early this summer ahead of the Olympic Games held in the City of Lights, and it became one of the year's most surprising hits.

The shark thriller's premise is simple a fast-evolving giant shark gets stuck in the Seine and, if not captured, would lead to a massive bloodbath given an upcoming triathlon. The film gained Stephen King's approval shortly after its release on the platform, and rose to the top of the charts, dominating the Non-English top for weeks despite little to no promotion from the streaming. Given its success, Variety reports that Netflix is developing a sequel to Under Paris.

Per Variety, Netflix has confirmed that Under Paris 2 is now in development with Gens returning as director. The sequel will also feature at least two actors from the original reprising their roles, including Brnice Bejo as Sophia, a grieving activist, and Nassim Lyes as Adil, a police officer. The report states that the film is eyeing a September 2025 filming start date, though it's possible this could be pushed back into 2026.

While Under Paris broke records as the first non-English language film on Netflix with more than 102.3 million views, the shark horror movie’s post-apocalyptic ending offered an intriguing hook for continuation.

Bejo’s grieving activist character will return, alongside Nassim Lyes (“Mayhem!”) as the empathetic cop who also survived the first film.

In a recent interview with La Tribune, Bejo claimed the sequel will start filming in September 2025. Though Variety reports that this sequel is still in its earliest stages and not likely to shoot before 2026.
