Xavier Gens, the popular genre filmmaker behind Netflix’s hit shark movie “Under Paris,” “Mayhem!” and “Gangs of London,” will next direct “Lady Chang.” The Thailand-set psychological thriller will be headlined by up-and-comer Anais Parello (“Under Paris”). Studiocanal will distribute in France and will handle international sales.
The film will also star Pascale Arbillot and Anne Marivin, as well as Franck Dubosc (“Rolling to You”), an actor well known for starring in successful French comedies who will make a rare incursion in a non-comedic role.
“Lady Chang” is produced by Vincent Roget via his and Gens’ Same Player outfit, and co-produced by genre specialists Wtf films. Set to start shooting on location on May 12 for nine weeks, the film has also been acquired by Amazon Prime Video, as well as the broadcaster France Televisions and pay TV channel Ocs. Squid Gameseason 2 was an unbridled success for Netflix, and it reached a new viewership milestone. The sophomore season saw the return of Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, as he re-enters the games to save as many people as possible and end the deadly competition once and for all. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk returned as the director and writer, alongside several other familiar stars. Squid Game season 2 debuted with big numbers when it premiered in December 2024, even breaking a multitude of viewership records for Netflix.
According to Netflix, Squid Game season 2 has already earned 190 million views. It marks only the third season of any show to ever do so, as only Squid Game season 1 (265 million views) and Wednesday season 1 (250 million views) have reached that milestone. Australian indie horror director Sean Byrne has a new shark attack film that has struck global distribution deals. Dubbed a "shark-meets-serial-killer" movie, the film will see a shark-obsessed serial killer (Suicide Squad's Jai Courtney) abduct a free-spirited surfer named Zephyr, played by Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone). He takes her out to sea in a boat, where she has to figure out how to escape before he "ritualistically feeds her to the sharks below," according to the plot. Joining the cast is Josh Heuston (Dune: Prophecy), who will play Zephyr's boyfriend, Moses. It sounds like a clever plot.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film was shot last year on the Gold Coast of Australia, and was written by newcomer, Nick Lepard, who also wrote Keeper, Osgood Perkins' new film following The Monkey. The majority of the theatrical rights to the international market have already been sold by Mister Smith Entertainment.

One of its surprise hits is the French action thriller Ad Vitam. The series premiered on the platform on Jan. 10, 2025, and has been raking in major views since its release, dominating the non-English charts. The film's ongoing popularity led to Ad Vitam joining Netflix's Most Popular Non-English Movies list, per Tudum.

Shark movies are a breed of their own. Ever since Steven Spielberg turned many people off beach holidays, filmmakers have constantly attempted to keep the fear of sharks alive, with varying results. From the simple premise of Open Water, to the bonkers insanity of Sharknado and its many sequels, spinoffs and ripoffs, there is no denying that shark movies have their own place in the world. Now Frozen (not that one) and Hatchet director Adam Green is about to make everyone afraid to go to a wedding.
As reported by Deadline, The Ascent is described as following “a group of friends who arrive in Europe for a glamorous but daring destination wedding. The fun and games turn into a nightmare when they find themselves precariously suspended above shark-infested waters and in a battle for survival.” All sounds plausible and standard stuff, right?

Netflix, Max and Prime Video are currently in the thick of negotiations with French film guilds to seek earlier access to newly released theatrical movies as part of an industry-wide process to update the country’s windowing rules.
France’s strict windowing rules apply to French and global streamers, as well as local free-to-air and pay-tv channels, determining the sequences of rights for each player. Their position in the windowing schedule is contingent on their level of investment in local content; a system which has allowed French production to blossom. Therefore, over the last few years, streamers — which invest less in French movies — have had to wait between 15 to 17 months after a film’s release to launch it on their services, while pay-tv group Canal+ has enjoyed a six-month window.
But last week, Disney+, whose SVOD window was at 17 months, got ahead of all other streamers by signing a pact...

Netflix's Shark Thriller With the Stephen King Stamp of Approval Seemingly Reaches a Glorious Record
In the summer of 2024, France hosted the Olympic Games in Paris, bringing millions of people to the City of Lights. The same year, Netflix released a shark thriller that, similarly to the sports event, held a triathlon in the capital where the participants were in danger because of a giant shark and her offspring.
Under Paris premiered on June 5, 2024, on Netflix and it has been a resounding success. The shark thriller debuted at the top of the charts with massive numbers, raking in 40.9 million views in its first week alone. For the week between Jan. 20 and Jan. 26, Under Paris continued its dominance in sixth place, adding 1 million views more, Tudum confirms.

In the last few years, Netflix has further expanded its slate with foreign titles that have proven to be extremely popular. Aside from the worldwide phenomenon series Squid Game and Money Heist, the streamer has released many popular movies, too, like 2023's Society of the Snow, 2019's The Platform, and 2024's Under Paris.
A new title that's making waves on the streaming service is Ad Vitam. The French action thriller debuted on Netflix on Jan. 10, 2025, and has been a huge hit ever since. Everyone loves a good shark movie. Ever since Jaws hit theaters and broke box office records in 1975, it’s been a reliable horror movie genre. Case in point: Netflix’s Under Paris has become one of the streaming service’s most popular non-English language film of all time (and a sequel is now in the works). While everyone knows Jaws is by far the best shark movie ever, there are loads of other movies out there that should make you just as afraid to get in the water. We’re gonna need a bigger boat as we travel these dangerous waters of shark films.
Zombie (1979)
Ok. Already I’m cheating, but I mean . . . come on. This has one of the best shark scenes in cinematic history. During an early scene of the movie, a woman decides to go for a swim in the lovely Caribbean waters when a tiger shark appears.

Netflix has continued to bring some incredibly popular action movies to streaming, and not just those from U.S. studios. Their new chart-topping release is the French movie Ad Vitam, which has already been compared to Liam Neeson’s Taken – even if its reviews have fallen a little short of that classic tale of skills and revenge. Having landed on the platform on January 10, the movie immediately overtook popular titles like Despicable Me and the Rush Hour trilogy to claim the number one spot easily.

Named Ad Vitam, the new French-language film follows in the footsteps of movies like Under Paris, marking another streaming hit mega-hit out of the European nation.
The movie follows a French man named Franck as his past comes to bite him when his pregnant wife, Leo is kidnapped for (what seems at the time) no reason.

Netflix recently released the data of the top 10 most-watched films in 2024. The Millie Bobby Brown-led Damsel tops the chart with 143.8 million views in total, followed by Lift with 129.4 million views. Though most of the top 10 films have been released in recent years, the list also includes some all-time classics, such as 2015's Minions and 2017's The Boss Baby.
Three of the ten movies are made for audiences of all ages, and two are rom-coms. From the most recent shark movie, Under Paris, to the heartbreaking retelling of a 1975 plane crash, the most-streamed films of the year cover a wide range of genres. In the digital age, where many movies are primarily made for streaming services, the quality of these films can be uneven.

Netflix's latest disaster show is trending on a new streaming chart despite a weak reception from audiences. Stories of disaster, both real and fictional, have tended to find an audience on Netflix. Society of the Snow, from director J.J. Bayona, was the third most-watched Netflix film for the first half of 2024. The drama unfolds in 1972, focusing on the true story of a Uruguayan rugby team's experience in 1972 and their ordeal after a flight crashed in the Andes Mountains.
Under Paris was also not too far behind as the fourth most-watched film during that same period. Directed by Xavier Gens, who wrote the script with Yannick Dahan, Maud Heywang, Yaël Langmann and Olivier Torres, the French film centered on a grieving marine biologist who has to save Paris from a giant shark. As the new year begins, though, a miniseries, with only four episodes, is showing signs of success.

2024 was a breakout year for horror films from across the globe, the likes of which deserve just as much attention and accolades as any domestic genre achievements.
2024 has been a fascinating year for film. Still reeling from 2023’s SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes and pushed back release dates, movie audiences have continually embraced the safe and soothing nostalgia of franchise fare and superhero cinema. Nearly every film from 2024’s top ten highest-grossing titles are sequels, which is creatively frustrating on some level, but this trend hasn’t impeded the horror genre from making significant cinematic gains.

From Navarro’s chestburster in Alien: Romulus to Monstro Elisasue’s on-stage degradation in The Substance, the horror movies of 2024 were bursting at the seams with blood and gore. This has been a really terrific year for horror films. I Saw the TV Glow dealt with poignant social themes, A Quiet Place: Day One offered a surprisingly character-driven perspective of the apocalypse, and Trap saw M. Night Shyamalan at his Shyamalan-iest (for better or worse).
And 2024 didn’t just deliver great horror movies; it delivered blood-drenched horror movies. Longlegs has a scene where the eponymous serial killer paints a police interrogation room with his own blood. At Content London, vp of content Emea Larry Tanz, vp of content France Pauline Dauvin and vp of content Italy Tinny Andreatta spoke during a fireside discussion celebrating big milestones for Netflix, with the 10-year anniversary this year in France and Germany and more dates to mark in 2025 in Italy and Spain.

Roboshark is now streaming on Prime Video. If you have not heard of the movie, there is probably a good reason for that. If you have heard of it, why are you looking to return there again? Yes Roboshark is exactly what it sounds like, a SyFy special that comes from the “so bad its really bad” category that so many Shark-sploitation films fall into. Now, Prime Video are hosting the absurd movie, so anyone missing a dose of brainless, bad-cgi nonsense can get their fix.
First airing in 2015 on SyFy during Shark Week, Roboshark has an appearance by a shark that has been - surprise! - robotically enhanced after eating an alien probe. That’s right, it is not just a ludicrous shark movie, it is an alien movie too. The new Roboshark, which is now playing host to alien life, begins a path of destruction across Seattle...

2024 seems to be the year of shark thrillers! After making a sensational return in “Under Paris” (2024), they once again come back to thrill us in “The Last Breath” (2024), directed by Joachim Hedenis. Although the sharks don’t show up until quite late into the movie, when they do, they are traveling at lightning speed and only show interest in human blood. All the while, a group of five friends try to escape from the ruins of a sunken WWII ship discovered somewhere off the coast of a Caribbean island.
If you choose the willing suspension of disbelief, this film has a lot to like. However, the Jaws references, and the CGI sharks almost make you want to scream ‘Cute’ after every 10 minutes in the second half of the film. “The Last Breath” (2024) is fun if you let underwater claustrophobia entertain you, and if you have watched it already, here’s...

Netflix has announced the creation of Troll 2, the sequel to its globally acclaimed Norwegian monster movie, which will be released in 2025. The news follows the original film’s success, which enthralled international audiences and broke streaming records.
The first Troll film, which aired in December 2022, was a watershed moment for Netflix. It grossed an incredible 103 million views and became the platform’s most-watched non-English language film. Roar Uthaug, who developed the concept over two decades, will return to direct the sequel.
The film will have a new ensemble cast, including Sara Khorami, Jon Ketil Johnsen, and Gard B. Eidsvold. While precise narrative details remain unknown, the original film’s idea revolved around a huge 150-foot troll rising in the Norwegian highlands and destroying the country’s capital.
“The first film deliberately left room for further exploration,” said producer Kristian Strand Sinkerud, who had previously hinted at a possible sequel.

Now that Under Paris is getting a sequel, Jason Stathams blockbuster The Meg franchise finally has some competition as the twenty-first centurys biggest shark horror series. The Megs 2018 success came as something of a surprise in a summer packed with blockbuster hits. The same year that Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Venom, Deadpool 2, and Aquaman dominated the box office, a killer shark movie with one A-list star that spent almost three decades in development hell earned over $500 million. Similarly, Netflixs shark horror Under Paris was a surprise sleeper hit when the low-budget French disaster movie was released.

The impact of Steven Spielberg's Jaws continues to be felt to this day because, without the success of the 1975 thriller film, there perhaps wouldn't be such a large influx of shark attack movies as we have today. This summer, Spielberg's iconic blockbuster inspired yet another addition to the beloved sub-genre with Under Paris, which was released on Netflix to record-breaking numbers. Under Paris recorded the highest launch for a non-English movie on the streamer with over 102.3 million views, proving that our collective fascination with the underwater creature isn't dwindling anytime soon. It now appears that Netflix is looking to capitalize on that success as the streamer is reportedly developing a sequel to the film.

Netflix recently announced that its successful horror movie, Under Paris, is getting a sequel, but the new release is already facing a massive problem that is plaguing streaming services. Released in 2024, Under Paris is a French horror film which follows a marine biologist named Sophia who is forced to face her traumatic past when the violent shark named Lilith that killed her husband suddenly swims up the River Seine. Although Under Paris received mixed reviews, the film was a smash success for Netflix. It quickly became one of the best received non-English language films on the platform.
Now, Under Paris is officially getting a sequel, which is good news for fans of the film. Considering Under Paris's shocking ending, the new installment will presumably see the return of Sophia as she attempts to track down Lilith and kill her once and for all. Open Water, which has a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, is getting a new streaming home starting in December. The shark horror film, which is loosely based on a true story, was released in 2004, but starting on Dec. 1, it can be streamed for free on Tubi.
Open Water stars Blanchard Ryan as Susan Watkins and Daniel Travis as Daniel Kinter, scuba divers who accidentally are stranded in shark-infested waters after their tour boat leaves them. The abandoned couple must contend with sharks and other marine creatures as they struggle to stay alive in the cold ocean.
Cbr named the film one of the 10 Must-Watch Horror Movies Set at Sea, and called it an example of minimalist filmmaking done correctly. In the movie, the majority of the time is centered around the couple, adrift in the ocean. However, it stands out from other shark films because of its use of real-life sharks in its production.

We have great news to share for fans of the hit French shark movie Under Paris. An Under Paris 2 is reportedly in development at Netflix, which means we're in for another crazy underwater adventure!
The first film was a smash hit when it landed on Netflix back in June 2024, eventually earning the title of the second most popular non-English movie on Netflix, right behind the epic monster film Troll. That's why it's not completely surprising that a sequel is in the works.
Also, the star of Under Paris, Bérénice Bejo, spilled in a recent interview with LA Tribune that production on a sequel will start in September 2025. However, there wasn't any confirmation at the time that an Under Paris 2 was actually in the works. Now, it seems that we have that confirmation.
According to Variety, French filmmaker Xavier Gens, who was behind the first movie, is currently working on the sequel.

Under Paris, a shark thriller from genre regular Xavier Gens, was released through the Netflix streaming service on June 5th (you can read our review Here) and turned out to have the best launch for a non-English language film on Netflix, drawing in more than 102.3 million views. So it’s no surprise to hear, via Variety, that a sequel is in development. Both Gens and star Bérénice Bejo, who received an Oscar nomination for her role in the 2011 silent film The Artist, are expected to return for Under Paris 2. Bejo has even been quoted as saying that the sequel would begin filming in September of next year, but Variety’s sources cautioned that the project is still in early stages and might not make it into production until 2026.

2024 has been a year filled with many exciting titles and Netflix did its dues. Under Paris premiered early this summer ahead of the Olympic Games held in the City of Lights, and it became one of the year's most surprising hits.
The shark thriller's premise is simple a fast-evolving giant shark gets stuck in the Seine and, if not captured, would lead to a massive bloodbath given an upcoming triathlon. The film gained Stephen King's approval shortly after its release on the platform, and rose to the top of the charts, dominating the Non-English top for weeks despite little to no promotion from the streaming. Given its success, Variety reports that Netflix is developing a sequel to Under Paris.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water... Actually, who are we kidding? We absolutely did not think it was safe to go back in any sort of water at the end of Under Paris, the surprisingly successful French shark movie that whipped up a viewing frenzy when it dropped on Netflix earlier this summer. And yet, despite the somewhat apocalyptic climax to Xavier Gens' *ahem* in-Seine creature feature, the intrepid filmmaker is preparing to dive back into the City of Love's shark infested waters once again with a sequel to his summer smash.

Despite its seemingly final ending, the French shark thriller ‘Under Paris’ has paved the way for a sequel. According to Variety, filmmaker Xavier Gens is back at the drawing board, spurred by the film’s record-breaking debut as Netflix’s most-watched non-English language film with over 102.3 million views.
The forthcoming movie, set to begin production as early as September 2025, will bring back several key cast members.
Bérénice Bejo, known for her Oscar-nominated role in ‘The Artist’, returns as a grief-stricken activist. She’s joined by Nassim Lyes from ‘Mayhem!’, who will reprise his role as a cop.
In a recent discussion with La Tribune, Bejo shared her excitement about diving back into the chilling waters of the Parisian underground.
Although filming might kick off a bit later, possibly stretching into 2026, the anticipation is already high. ‘Under Paris’ initially caught viewers’ attention with its satirical edge and timely release before the Paris Olympics.

Netflix's new survival thriller with a 75% Rotten Tomatoes score has become a global hit just days after its release. Since 2015, the popular streaming service has been producing original movies that fall into a wide range of genres from action, horror, thriller, romantic comedy, and science-fiction. Within this wide range, thrillers are particularly popular, with many of Netflix's 2024 movies falling into the genre, including Rebel Ridge, Trigger Warning, The Union, and many more.
Among Netflix's original movies, survival thrillers seem to hold an extra special appeal, focusing on characters fighting against extreme odds and often blending elements from various genres, mainly horror. In 2018, Sandra Bullock's Bird Box became one of Netflix's most-watched movies in its history. Additionally, the Spanish-language The Platform, packed with social commentary, and the French-language Under Paris are among Netflix's most-watched non-English movies. The former was followed by a sequel, The Platform 2, in 2024, which briefly became the No.

The former was followed by a sequel, The Platform 2, in 2024, which briefly became the No.

Shark films throughout the years have become popular for their use of tense atmospheres, shocking moments, and the pure primal fear they evoke in audiences. Despite the best shark films like Jaws, which can dominate a genre, there are many lesser-known films about sharks that are equally engaging, unique, and frightening. The films employ varying techniques to convey the imminent danger that shark attacks present and make the audience identify with the characters involved. Making the moments presented come to life in a more realistic way.
Rather than being held back by classics like Jaws and The Meg, these films have found a way to inject new imagination into the Shark genre, combining innovative stories with scary, heart-pounding moments. Whether it's an attack during a planned mission, such as in Under Paris, or a romantic folk tale about shark fishing in Mexico, like Tiburoneros, films about sharks have a way of captivating the audience.

NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock had a big July and a massive August thanks almost exclusively to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Netflix had an equally massive January-to-June, in part because of all NBCUniversal’s animated movies available on the streamer.
In case you’ve been living under a mountain of other Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, on Thursday, September 19, Netflix shared more than 16,000 lines of its viewership data from the first half of 2024. It lists every show or movie watched on Netflix around the globe, how many views each had, and for how many hours they were watched. Light reading material for us.
Twice a year, there are endless takeaways from Netflix’s data dump. One of the big ones from this set was just how dominant NBCUniversal’s animated films are — only not on NBCUniversal’s own streaming platform, Peacock.

Netflix has a wide range of survival thrillers and horrors available to stream but one of its titles exceeded expectations this year Under Paris. The French thriller premiered in early June, and it's still wildly popular.
Under Paris is currently enjoying its 15th week in Netflix's Top 10, taking the last spot between Sept. 16 and Sept. 22, with another million views, a huge feat for an international film. With little to no promo, Under Paris has been a huge hit since its premiere on June 5, beating even the ultimate monster, the Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One. Three months later, the monster of Under Paris is still holding on tightly to the charts.
