Guide," directed by Vijay Anand, is a classic Bollywood film that beautifully blends drama, romance, and spirituality. Based on R. K. Narayan's novel, the movie stars Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman in stellar performances.
Set against the backdrop of picturesque landscapes, the film tells the story of Raju, a charismatic tour guide who undergoes a profound transformation. Dev Anand's portrayal of Raju is charismatic and nuanced, capturing the complexities of the character.
The narrative skillfully weaves together themes of love, sacrifice, and self-discovery. Waheeda Rehman's character, Rosie, adds depth to the storyline, and the chemistry between the lead actors is palpable.
The film's music, composed by S. D. Burman, is iconic, featuring timeless melodies like "Tere Mere Sapne" and "Gaata Rahe Mera Dil."
"Guide" stands out for its innovative storytelling and powerful performances, making it a cinematic gem that continues to be celebrated. It remains a must-watch for those who appreciate storytelling that goes beyond the conventional.

I had seen The Guide way back in 1965 when it was released and I was just 8 years old. Subsequently I saw it 10 years back on YouTube. However I watched the re-mastered and restored version about a week back. The visuals, editing. Dialogue, music, songs were mesmerizing. Dev Anand as an actor was never better either before this movie or later. It was Vijay Anand's direction and screenplay was world-class and to be frank better than the novel which was written by R. K. Narayan who was not too pleased with either the English or the Hindi version. Kishore Sahu as the husband of Rosie Leela Chitnis as Raju's mother Jagirdar as the villager Anwar Hussain as Raju's friend all were excellent. Waheeda Rehman is splendid first as a frustrated wife who leans on Raju , The Guide for solace then as a lover then as a successful performer who condones Raju's crime but still loves him on knowing about the sacrifices made by him to give hopes to the villagers. So many emotions but always spot on with her expressions. Her snake dance to overcome her frustrations, her celebration of being free from her husband's clutches in Aaj phir jeene ki Tamanna hai to her lovely dance in Piya tose naina large re to Saiyaan Beimaan showing contempt for Dev's crime, all dances reflect great dignity expression beauty and class. Waheeda and Dev Anand light up the screen with their tremendous performances. The Guide is a timeless classic and will be remembered for a long long time.

- CuriosidadesDev Anand was approached by director Tad Danielewski and writer Pearl S Buck about making a film set in India for Hollywood. After Narayan's novel was selected plans began forming to film an English and Hindi version together. Filming a shot in one language immediately followed by the same shot in the other would save time and money. But differences between the two directors made this impossible. The English version was completed first, and then the Hindi version was shot with a new script and directed by Dev Anand's younger brother Vijay Anand. Dev Anand writes in his autobiography. "Not a single shot taken in the English version would be repeated or included in its Hindi counterpart. The story outline was to be the same but the treatment completely different. It meant doing the same film twice, for two diametrically opposite tastes, the eastern and the western." While Guia (1965) (India) became an award winning classic, appearing on "best of" lists, The Guide (US) flopped badly at the box office and is rarely shown.
